One quote attributed to Mary Barra in January? says, “We are not actively working on providing infrastructure.”
This means General Motors is NOT building DC chargers, buying sites, or otherwise competing with existing DCFC startups. GM does NOT make their own EVSE's even, or their wall chargers.
This does NOT mean they are not cooperating with DCFC companies, nor does it mean GM will never "actively work on providing infrastructure". In January, GM was not building DCFC sites, so she answered the question correctly.
But the question GM was answering was not whether GM was currently doing anything (and it was about funding, so she was not asked if GM was building anything). The question was whether GM would do an infrastructure project similar to what other manufacturers had done and were planning.
My earlier post said GM "said they had no plans". So I agree that Gross' answer could have indicated either that they hadn't made a decision yet, OR it could have been meant to "cover" hidden plans - but only if she was choosing to not really answer the question to hide information. Hiding information is not a huge deal; there can be good reasons for a public company to do so. But if that was why her answer was structured that way, it does mean that her current remarks are indeed a public change, which is the point I was making. If she answered that way because they hadn't decided but now they have, same thing. Good news.
Fletcher's answer to the same question was: "We believe all our customers should benefit from any infrastructure spending" which is a little harder to reconcile with their current plans. But we still have too little information to say much. I hope more will come soon.
