I had the same mental debate before getting my car, "Do I get the Model S or Model 3 Performance?"

I opted to get the Tesla Model 3 Performance (was lucky enough to get the Stealth version).

Money was a factor, about $40k (Canadian) less, but sharing my other considerations;

Speed was important
- Model 3 Performance, is more agile, fast without need to engage Ludicrous
- Model 3 P can do more hot launches, with newer battery tech
- faster charging (at the time)
- futuristic looking interior
- Decent amount of space inside and large trunk

My wife still wants the Model S but I'm waiting for next generation Plaid models to get released. Model X was not a consideration since I hate the Gull wing doors. Model Y looks intriguing but I don't know if I can take the performance hit from my M3P-.

P.S. Most non-car buffs (i.e. Women) can't tell the difference between a Model 3 and Model S.

As a Model 3 P owner and having friends with an X as well as had several weeks with an S. I'd say the following:

Pro's for Model S
  • Model S for range for sure. You can crank up the heat,AC OR SPEED and will always have plenty of range (373 EPA estimated which should be closer to 390 according Elon's comments). A 100 kWh is a lot of juice on a RAVEN powertrain. A P3D+ real world range is closer to 270-280 miles new not 300 as Tesla advertises. And it gets less in cold or hot due to HVAC and speeding.
  • The hatch/trunk is A LOT OF SPACE for a family. You might get a little crowded with a 3 if your'e carrying 3-5 people and the luggage/gear. You will never have that issue with an S and the hatch/hidden compartments.
  • Adaptive suspension is a better ride.
  • Powered Liftgate is lovely.
  • Bio-filter defense HEPA filter.
Pro's for the 3 Performance
  • Driveability - The 3 handles much better like a sports car. Its tight and true and you don't feel the weight like you might on an S.
  • Parking - Its a smaller vehicle so its easier to park as wells
  • Dual Screens IMO is a CON more than a pro after using a 3 as my daily driver. The horizontal layout is MUCH better Tesla Netflix + games etc. The giant screen actually makes the speedometer a lot easier to read than the small readout on the dash.
  • Autopilot interface is much more visual, this relates again to the dual screen issue. You can easily see the details of what autopilot is doing and interact with it compared to the tiny dash display on the S/X.
