Choosing the Right Paint Protection Film Shop for your new Tesla

Tesla Paint Protection

These are some of the things you should be considering before choosing a film shop.

A quality product:
Work with a shop that uses products from one of these manufacturers. Ceramic Pro KAVACA, PremiumShield, SunTek, STEK or XPEL. (The truth is that most of the films perform very similarly - what matters the most is the installation of the film and how the film is laid on the vehicle.

Certified Installers - Our paint protection film installers are all manufacturer-certified having completed training and have hundreds of hours invested in training.

Clean Facility - Our floor has been sealed with a long-lasting, durable, polyaspartic floor system. Our floors are scrubbed with an industrial floor scrubber at least once a week to ensure that our facility always stays clean.

Use of an Electronic Plotter: Paint Protection Film can be cut using various pieces of software designed for specific vehicles. This requires the use of a paint protection film plotter. "Plotting" film kits often ensure a proper installation with little to no cutting of the film while on the vehicle. A plotter is often in the $8,000 range - if a shop has a film plotter, they are likely more experienced in installing paint protection film vs shops that are doing every piece by hand. "Bulk" (no pattern) installing film isn't inherently bad and when done skillfully, it looks fantastic but a shop should try and avoid that wherever possible.

Air Filtration - Our facility boasts more than 2000 cfm of air filtration down to .005 microns. That ensures that we filter the majority of the particulate matter from the air, ensuring that your vehicle has a very clean installation.

Film Handling: Paint protection film should be handled in a VERY specific manner. The adhesive side of the paint protection film is extremely tacky. You should NEVER, if possible, allow paint protection film to fold over and touch its self during the installation process as you will create adhesive disturbances and permanent imperfections. You also need to ensure that there is enough lubrication present on the vehicle and film before locking it down on the vehicle. You should ask a shop how they maneuver film onto the vehicle to ensure that they are going to use proper film handling techniques.

Realistic Warranty: A shop should give you realistic warranty expectations. Almost ALL of the high-quality products offer a similar warranty of 8-12 years against fading, yellowing, cracking, and things of that nature. What you should be MORE concerned about is how that shop plans to support you internally. You will want a shop that is going to be flexible should anything happen to your film. No film warranties cover things like a breached film with deep scratches, staining, water spots.

Proper Education Surrounding Installation:
Inexperienced and ego-driven paint protection film shops will boast about hiding and tucking every single edge and seam when the truth is that doing so will likely significantly increase the chances of the adhesive failing and peeling. Paint protection film has optical clarity components in it which can only be stretched so far. If the film is stretched too far, it will begin to distort and crack. In addition, if there is too much tension, film will lift up and peel and become contaminated.

Temperature controlled - Paint protection film needs to be applied between 65-80*F. Our facility posts a multizone, heat, and air-conditioned workspace, ensuring that each install is applied during ideal temperatures at all times. This not only ensures that the film behaves properly during the installation, but that the installer isn’t insanely uncomfortable during your installation.

Secure - Our facility has 24/7 video surveillance, electronic locks, remote monitoring, and industrial security to ensure that your vehicle stays safe. We also operate our facility on an appointment-only basis to ensure that your vehicle is always secure. Vehicles are never stored outside and our facility doors are secured with security-rated doors.

Sales Tactics: A Film shop really should be looking out for your best interest. They should always make suggestions based on your use case and particular wants and needs. Some shops may strongly recommend one option over another because of real-world experiences (such as installing a partial on a lightly colored vehicle).

Brand Experience: How much experience do they have with your particular make and model? Make sure they know those paint systems inside and out and how the film is supposed to behave on your vehicle. How much information does that particular manufacturer of the film have published?

These are common mistakes that Tesla owners make when purchasing paint protection film.

Letting too much time pass
- Your vehicle is new one time and one time only. If you want to do everything that you can, have it protected immediately. Set up an appointment with your PPF shop weeks in advance!

Shopping on Price: Shopping Paint Protection Film based on price alone is the absolute worst way to go about choosing a film shop. You will find quality shops will be similar in price point but if you are being quoted $1500 for a full front on your new Model S - run away as fast as possible. The price of the paint protection film installation should be reflected with quality of install and an awesome customer experience.

Always Ask for Referrals: You should be asking other owners who installed their film and how their experience was. A shop should be able to produce some referrals, letters of recommendation, and online reviews that speak about the experience of a film installation.

Beware of the rope: Some shops (including ours) ask for a deposit to hold your appointment slot. We will often ask for a few hundred dollars or if it is a very large job, up to 20%. You shouldn't be paying for more than that with any shop. If they are asking you for more, you should consider shopping elsewhere.
