I had the Energy Display forecast on the screen all the time so was able to modulate my driving to the forecast energy consumption.
I wasn't actually that worried.

I actually arrived home with 3%. I think I lost those when the battery cooled down.

That's you probably got the warning that the car is below 10%, plug in immediately

But at least you know how long it takes for a full charge

My Model S shut down on me a few years ago with 3 miles of range on the dash still. Hopefully they've built a little more buffer in since then, but I wouldn't count on it.
