And what's good about it when we want everything to get powered by renewables? Existing coal plants won't shut down tomorrow unfortunately but this could reduce their pollution and I wonder if this tech would work on natgas plants as well.

That is because global power generation will increase by 45% from 2019 to 2040 and renewables and other sources of electricity generation will not be able to replace coal in the developing economies, particularly in India and South East Asian countries. Consequently, while the share of coal in global electricity generation will continue falling from 37% in 2019 to 24% in 2040, electricity generation from coal in TWh would decrease by only 5% in the same period."

But I agree with the title... a coal plant is cleaner when it's no longer burning anything

That graph is a bit misleading. That's the derivative of this below. Basically IEA expected linear growth vs exponential.

So... yeah... we should be at ~23% renewables by 2023 not 2040... because adoption curves aren't linear.
