Cockpit Design? Finally found concept I was thinking about.

I don't look at my gauges very much at all. I'm mostly looking out of the window 98% of the time. I really don't want anything impeding my view out of the window. I don't look at my speedometer to check my speed.

How often do you guys need to look down? For what? If it weren't for legal requirements and regulations, I would say - No instruments at all.
Since we have to have instruments....then they might as well look cool.

Looks great looking down on it like this. My issue continues to be (and I know that it may well be just me) that I hate looking through the steering wheel for information. Something is always obscured or hard to read. That's a main reason why I am all for trying a partial wheel. Depending on how it was engineered I really don't think it would be a safety hazzard in an emergency, as I know many fear it would be. I'd like to see what one would look like at least.

For me a partial steering wheel would cause more issues than instrument cluster behind it. I need to park daily in tight spaces during which being able to grab at any point of the wheel makes things more smooth.

Now that's another perfect example of what Tesla could do with that black bar behind the steering wheel. Absolutely Beautiful interactive display. .

Now that's a cockpit. Cowbell Cowbell Cowbell

Nope, not for me. Breaks the KISS principal. When I am driving I don't need purdy lights right in my face to tell me what the weather is outside, or that somehow I can change the "in call" settings. It is not a touch screen so I would have to find another control somewhere to set and then select an option. Sat Nav looks a bit restrictive too, where is the map?

What is the point in the display in the armrest? Is that a phone? What if I have an incompatible phone or one that doesn't fit?

Form follows function. A larger single area is needed for autopilot.

You seem to want a different car than the model 3 you ordered

Edit: I'll add that Tesla may simply be adding an instrument cluster on top of the dash they showed at the reveal. Musk would be the guy to use HUD if it worked (cost and usability). But there is no way to know if HUD works before the second reveal.

Tesla folk giving test rides (who were an assortment of mid-higher up level people) stated that the cockpit design is pretty close to final, including the lack of an instrument cluster.

Then Musk insisted that the final design would be "like a spaceship".

The only current design I can think of that is even close to "like a spaceship" is the new Audi design in which the instrument cluster itself is a high quality LCD display driven by a powerful graphics processor so that the display can be completely reconfigured on the fly by the driver.

A single strip of black plastic behind the wheel and an off axis 17" LCD panel showing the car's speed int he corner is about as far from "spaceship" as I can imagine.

For reference this is what the cockpit of the Dragon 2 looks like, something Musk can stroll down and look at pretty much anytime he wants and could be influencing his decision making;

Having just driven one of these as a loaner for a week, I can tell you that it sucks. Single-purpose buttons and scroll-wheels everywhere, different menu style depending on which screen you are looking at, strong reflection of the dash in the tiny windscreen... the only thing they got right was the cupholders.

If you want this, done right, then buy a Model S.

That Audi Cockpit is absolutely gorgeous. 3 screens. ( including the HVAC screen ).

For those that don't like screens - I can give you a roll of duct tape.

I totally disagree. I love the A4. Get some duct tape and cover up your buttons and screens.

I've never actually driven a car with a HUD before. I'd be interested in trying it sometime. I could see it being distracting and annoying or useful and totally awesome, depending on where the HUD is displayed and how well it actually works.

Absolutely. I said this in one of the HUD threads. I am 100% against a partial steering wheel, precisely for the reason you indicated. I would rather have the steering wheel at the reveal with no buttons or gadgets on it than a partial wheel. There's no way it's easier to steer and turn when you're missing 30-40% of the wheel.

That looks great! It is very possible that the empty space behind the Model 3s steering wheel that we saw during the reveal just have a temporary blanking space where a gauge cluster setup should be until they finalize their designs. It could be a floating display setup similar to the Porsche image you referenced. HUD may not be the only thing as most people seem to believe.
