Cold weather climate- blowing smoke into the cabin

Hi all, I’ve looked and can’t find any previous posts with this issue. On a road trip with family, leafy a hotel this morning with a full charge in 4F temperatures. About an hour into the drive, we smelled a tar/oil smell, followed shortly by a growling sound in the front of the car. As we were exiting to investigate, white smoke started blowing in through the climate vent and outside from under the hood. The smoke and sound stopped when climate was turned off.

After talking with roadside service, the offered a tow, but we decided to drive ~30 miles to a service center with no heat. That was chilly and rough to see through the windows, but we made it.

Has this happened to anyone else before? I see lots of cold weather heat pump posts, but none of the. Speak to growling and smoke. Thoughts?

Service has it and we’re back on the road in a rental. Hope everyone else is having better luck in cold temps.

Here’s what we learned. Might hear more when we pick it up on the way home on Tuesday. Service and roadside assistance were really helpful though.
