Collective wisdom - anything I am overlooking before taking delivery??

I have been reading frantically through many forum threads and watching tons of YouTube videos, but everyday I find something I didn't know. Like today, I found out that Tesla does constant hardware improvements and changes to the Model 3, so you have to go by build date and not model year to know what you're getting. It's driving my obsessive personality bonkers!

Since I am running out of time on making any changes because I am taking delivery this week, I wanted to ask if the collective wisdom of the forum sees anything I am missing so I avoid years of regret.

Here's my Model 3 story:

Originally ordered an SR+ red/white/19, but the Tesla reps were saying I could miss the end of year tax break, and if I did, the forum was saying it could be March/April before I would get my car, which would be very bad since I already privately sold my daily driver.

I panicked and called the Tesla sales rep that told me there's a AWD red/white/19 in Dallas (I am in Houston) that is in inventory. It was used for test drives, but only has 250 miles on it. It has a build date of Oct 16, and they are discounting it $1050 for the miles. I have to fly there to pick it up. No issue, I have plenty of airline points, and it's only an hour flight and 5 hr drive.

I said let's do it.

Had a very nice fellow board member in Dallas area go to check out the car for me (pics attached). He said it's perfect. Cell phone pics in their artificial garage lighting made the bumpers look like they were repainted, but I am learning this is pretty normal for M3 red cars, and the member said it looked like a good paint match in person. Other internet pics of red M3s look similar. Assure no paintwork, and the CarFax is clean.

The loan is now funded, I put in my ACH for the down payment, insurance done. Waiting for Tesla to tell me the soonest I can go pick it up. Right now scheduled for this Friday, which was the original date of the SR+.

Am I making any mistakes? I do ponder the upgrade to Performance/Stealth, but that's a whole other topic that's just a matter of me controlling my car obsessions. This is going to be just a daily driver for me. I have 3 pretty wild "fun" cars in the garage.

These are more the relevant questions to me:

- Is $1000 enough off to having had up to a 100 people launching the car during test drives?
- Am I missing any hardware differences from a Oct 16 build versus a December build?
- Anything else I am missing that I haven't read or watched a video about yet that would make someone want to go back and look at something different in inventory? It's really fear of the unknown right now for me.

I know I get the 1 week return, but I really don't want to go that route.

A $1,000 discount for only 250 miles is very reasonable as long as the car is otherwise in new condition. The red/white combination is very nice. Given the high demand and ending tax credit I think you are getting a very good deal on a very nice car. It wouldn’t hurt to ask if they have a stealth in stock but those are almost sold out at this point. Other than buying a stealth I think you are getting the best car overall for the money.

I’m not aware of any build differences between October and December. If there are, I’m sure they are very minor.

Thanks, your reply is reassuring.

I am sure I will suck myself into the $2K software performance upgrade, and I am thinking that will hold me over for a while.

Of course you'll "suck yourself in" to the additional performance. You'll also never regret it. In my own six years of Tesla driving I must admit that I resemble your comment.:D I ended out with a P85D when I ordered an S85, with the earlier delivery and price drop I was hooked. Then there was the ludicrous upgrade, I had to do it. Then OTA updates started flowing, with the first one being the Autopilot!:D:eek: That was really huge.

The Model 3 has been just the same except that I already ordered FSD and all the options I wanted. The OTA upgrades keep making the car better.

The only recommendation I make is to be sure you have FSD. Since you already have the new autopilot chip many new features will be coming quickly, including ones happening now that you will have when you pick up your car.

Make sure you do a very careful look for cosmetic issues because they'll fix anything that is imperfect. Buying demonstrators from Tesla is a really good deal IMHO.

Don’t forget to schedule a face massage for the day after to help wipe the smile off your face...

Congrats and hope the delivery goes smoothly! I looked at my car thoroughly before driving off the lot, and I’m sure you will to. Whatever you do, make sure items that aren’t satisfactory to you make it on a list of items for Tesla to fix post delivery.

Thanks. Definitely extra anxiety about the delivery since I have to fly to get it. If I have to fly back empty handed, it would be extremely painful for me.

I think you'll be fine. You had someone check the car out, which was smart given that it's been a test drive car. But if the report back says it's pristine, I'd say enjoy your holiday and then pick up your late Christmas present on Friday.

To directly answer your question, yes it's likely that there are some hardware changes between Oct and Dec, as they happen 'weekly' as Musk has said in the past. But the odds that there's anything significant (like the HW3 FSD computer being missing) are close to nil. And if you waited until March, you'd have additional tweaks vs a Dec build, so that's just a never-ending story that's not worth chasing.

Get the car, and enjoy it.

A friend ordered a demo car with 600 miles on it, but when we went to pick it up it had almost 1,100 miles on the odometer. Tesla kept using it as a demo car even after he purchased it. So be sure to check the odometer when you get there.

Wow, that's a lot of extra test drives! How long from the time he order it until he picked it up?

The store knows I am buying the car, but since I can back out of the sale pretty easily, I don't think I can order them not to use their car to help them sell more cars until I take delivery.

It was a week or two, I don't remember exactly. But they offered him a .72/mile discount based on 600 miles. When we went to pick it up and discovered it had 1,100 miles on it we asked them to adjust their discount accordingly, but they refused. So we rejected the car. Not a big deal since a new one was only a couple week lead time and we weren't fighting the end of year tax credit. But it wasn't handled very professionally, and they heard about it from me after the fact at the delivery center.

Yikes, that stinks for a buying experience, but good thing it was a happy ending.

They are giving me over $4/mile with 250 miles, so hopefully they won't be racking up too many miles. Just makes me want to get over there faster.

I can't get a call back from my Delivery Support Specialist, Pairisblu Davis. She is in Vegas. I'll fly up there today to go get it if I can.

Finally got someone from Tesla on the phone that can discuss me taking delivery of the car.

The good news is that it's no longer a demo car, it's at the service center, and it's detailed and ready to be delivered.

They said they are waiting on the full confirmation from Vegas to be able to release it. The Tesla rep said Thursday should be very possible. I would have gone today, but now it's late and I don't want to be driving back from Dallas to Houston at midnight.

Well, it took a lot of calls to Tesla to get someone to finally get the confirmation that I had paid for the car so I could pick it up. It’s like dealing with a 3rd world immigration service, except you can’t bribe anyone to get it done faster, which means you get better service from the 3rd world.

At the airport waiting for my flight to Dallas. If everything goes well, I’ll be making my first drive in the car as a long road trip starting around 3pm.

Exciting! Make sure to update us!

Made it to Tesla Service Center in Dallas/Plano yesterday around 2pm. Picking up the car was quick and painless.

They had only put on about 10 miles since I agreed to purchase the car, which is great after being scared about the 500 miles added to another demo in the messages above.

The car looked good. The bumper match is definitely not great, even in person, but much worse in pics. I compared my to a couple of other new red M3's on the lot and they are much closer matches. Not sure if I will fight that battle, but maybe they have a painted one in stock that matches better that I can have swapped. The rear is a better match.

Drove home without incident. Stopped for 2 superchargers, but could have made it on one. Then tried out the supercharger close to my house, and it's a convenient one.

A few issues now that I have driven it:

- Steering wheel is crooked when going straight. Car doesn't pull, but I'll get them to check the whole alignment.
- Software is way back, about 25 versions behind according to TeslaFi. Didn't see any updates on my wifi last night
- The passenger rear window is not properly aligned and it's creating an air gap with the seal. Air gaps very bad for road noise.
- Can't schedule an appt through the app. Says error, try again later. Will call them now

Very nice car. It gets down the road well, but it's nowhere near as luxurious and premium of a ride as my V8 Jaguar XF that I just sold due to it getting up there in age. I'll have to try to forget that car. If Tesla would steal some of those chassis engineers from Jaguar the way Kia steals top engineers and designers, they'd really be even that much more amazing.

This is common, I had to wait a few days for my first update. Switch updates to “Advanced” and just wait... ;-(. I’m surprised Tesla lets their cars leave the delivery center without the very latest update - imagine buying an new iPhone that is on IOS 12!

What’s even more strange to me is how they would use the car as a demonstrator without being able to show the latest features.

Very nice vehicle - congrats on the purchase! You're going to love driving it.... you'll forget the Jag in no time.

I've already forgotten my Cadillac. :)

The only issues really are the steering wheel and that window seal, and both are a quick adjustment at the service center.

May you have many many happy miles on the road ahead of you - you've chosen a beautiful car indeed!
