Comprehensive USB Bug List

There is another odd behavior when it comes to the cover image behavior (I tried finding it in this huge thread and didn't see it).
Every month I add new songs to my USB drive, and I need through this process to see cover images.
My directory structure is YEAR/song title.(mp4 | mp3)

#1 add the songs to a new folder (e.g. 2017_may)
-- MS adds the songs to its database, a small number (less than 2 over 20) have the cover image.
#2 rename the songs meta (artist or album title) -- e.g. change upper case to lower case, add "(single)" at the end of the album tile.
-- MS now recognizes the art work and correctly displays it (there is a small lag, for example if I play the first song in the folder I see no cover art, but if I return to it, it will show it)

Yesterday I tried to add all new songs with the same (fake) album title, to then change it to the correct one at the second scan and I found an odd surprise.
I had given the album title "May 2017" to all songs. MS scanned and showed the cover art to all songs correctly (all songs had different artist, so the cover art was different for all 27 songs)
When I replaced those songs with the the original ones, the album art was gone and I had to repeat the hideous process I described previously to get the album art back.

Interesting note, I have a model x right now and with the same USB media, the shuffle playback order is the same as my S.
That sure sounds like their shuffle algorithm uses something on the media to determine the seed.

I just looked through my USB stick with a particular UNIX command [1] and didn't find any hidden files which might hold a transferable shuffle list or random seed. So they're probably using the volume's last modification date or something along those lines. I do know that when I rename the top-level directories on my USB stick, it alters the shuffle order next time I plug it in.

[1] Interesting! The forum software gets all crazy with a "red alert, you have been blocked!" popup when I type ls, space, hyphen, la, space. Apparently certain SQL and UNIX commands trigger this blocking.

Here is a weird media player experience.

I was driving home and listening to a Jackson Brown song. I stopped to pickup my mail, came back to the car and the media player started playing the same song, though from the beginning. Then I noticed the display was not the same, it was the base USB display that shows the USB root folders, showed that it was rescanning the USB drive (the well documented but apparently random issue with which we're all aware), and had the "now playing" strip across the bottom showing the song.

But the media player was still playing the same song and all the sources were gray except USB since USB was selected. I tried fast forward, and it played another Jackson Browne song. I'm thinking how can it do that if it's rescanning? I did it again and got another. Then I hit the "now playing" strip to enlarge it and discovered it was playing Slacker! It had switched sources, but was playing the exact same song as when I got out of the car. Either some very strange coincidence, or some very strange programming in the media player.

Don't be worried, don't be afraid....you have just entered the @BertL Twilight Zone.

I don't know if this has been mentioned, but I ran into a weird bug today. I was playing a USB stick which has been in there a couple of weeks. When playing the USB stick and I leave the car, then come back, it starts playing the track it was on from the beginning of the track. A little annoying sometimes, but OK.

Today I had some stuff to put in the passenger side of the car, so I opened the passenger door instead of the driver's door and it switched to the radio. It was not a station I normally listen to, but my SO borrowed the car this week and she listens to that station, so it may have been the last station played. I was wondering what it would have played if I had opened one of the back doors instead?

Ive noticed the source changing in the latest release. Normally happened over night, but for sure it's a new one.

USB, MP3 VBR V0, embedded 600x600 JPG artwork.

It happened when I turned the car on in the morning. I always keep 38,000+ tracks on shuffle play on a 1TB USB SSD.

In addition to alternating between, two tracks, the player also downloaded random artwork instead of using the embedded artwork.

After this continued for a while and it became obvious that the skip buttons weren't going to navigate out of it, I brought up the USB music menu, selected songs, and picked an arbitrary song. At that point, everything went back to normal.

Weird.

It happened again.

It turns out that the player switched sources - to my phone. I did not realize that I had any music stored on my phone, but when I looked, I found two albums. One I had purchased years ago on iTunes, and the other was the "free" U2 download from a while back.

For some reason, the player switched sources and played two tracks from the phone (one from each album) in a continuous loop.

But at least now I know that, strictly speaking, it wasn't a USB player bug.

Interesting new observation (to me) about the strange track loop from a bluetooth source.

I've never figured out a precise pattern to recreate the mysterious MP switching bug, but @supratachophobia could be onto something related to first use of doors other than the driver, that he observed some time ago.

FWIW, I've had my iPhone, FM and AM unexpectedly begin playing when I open the door to my MS, but always after I had USB playing when I turned-off and exited my MS (I always try and listen to troubled USB media in my MS except upon rare occasion.)

I think it's doors/Bluetooth phone connection over certain amounts of time actually. I was not pairing my phone for a while and I noticed the resets we're less frequent.

Bonus: favorites wiped again after last update!

I don't remember if this was the case the first time I had the source switch happen, but I know for a fact that the second time it happened right after I loaded a computer into my car on the passenger side.

I only turn Bluetooth on with my phone if I'm already in the car and I tend to leave the phone in the car, I don't like carrying it around unless I have to. I have seen it switch to trying to connect to my phone when I get into the car, but switching back to USB usually makes it quit bothering the phone. I have no music on the phone, so there is nothing for it to find. When I take the phone out of the car probably the first thing I do is turn off Bluetooth.

Hope?

I just got 17.18.50 at the service center. As I drove away, I touched the shuffle and, amazingly got the first new song sequence in over 6 months.

Tomorrow will reveal all, but I am hoping that maybe something is improved

Not directly related to the Media Player bugs (I've seen no change in reported bugs over the past several software updates), but has anybody had problems with a USB flash drive containing music just by being plugged in causing the 17" touchscreen to crash or become unresponsive after the car powers down? sometimes getting a "Touchscreen unresponsive" warning on the instrument cluster and a message to reboot the screen by holding the scroll wheels?

I've been getting the "Touchscreen unresponsive" warnings more and more frequently when returning to the car after it's been parked for several hours or overnight, but it's intermittent - sometimes daily, other times several days apart. Sometimes no dash warning message just an unresponsive screen. I'm using the same 64GB (Sandisk Ultra Fit) USB flash drive for more than a year, no recent additions/changes to the music stored, but only in the past few months have I been having this problem (thinking it maybe started since one of the last few software updates?)

The service center suggested something plugged into the USB ports could be causing it. So I unplugged my USB flash drive for the past couple weeks, and I've only had to reboot the screen once although that time the problem didn't happen exactly the same (no "Touchscreen unresponsive" warning on dash, just the 17" was blank and needed reboot). Then last night I plugged the USB back in and this morning the problem reappeared. Since the problem was intermittent to begin with, I can't say for sure, but it's looking like there may be something to the USB flash drive triggering it. But curious since the same USB flash worked for a year or more without trouble....

I've now reformatted the USB flash drive and am now in the process of reloading my library. I guess the other thing to try is a completely different USB flash device. but in the meantime wondering if anybody else has seen their USB flash drive causing touchscreen unresponsive/reboot issues?

I just had a 32gb USB stick go bad. It does happen and seemingly without warning.
