Concerns of purchasing used Performance Lud car

Would one be super cautious and concerned buying a used performance Model X or S that has ludicrous mode because there is no way tell if the Ludicrous feature was abused? thus taking a toll on the battery?

Thoughts?

Thanks

Depends on how much the buyer values free supercharging vs a 4-year warranty.

Model S 4-yr ESA costs $4,750

Model X 4-yr ESA costs $5,300

Even at a ridiculous expensive home off-peak electricity rate of $0.15/kWh, an average annual mileage of 15,000 miles is $750/yr. You’d have to drive at least 6-7 years before it’s break even between charging at home or taking the 4-yr ESA.

With a private or non dealer purchase you can at least view and test drive the car.

With Tesla you are 100% rolling the dice.

Are you afraid to ask Tesla for pictures of the used vehicle they have? That’s something they will give you if you’re interested in buying used.

$5k for an extended service plan with a deductible? ROFL! Hard pass. We'll leave that alone for a minute for purposes of this conversation.

Still doesn't address the difference in delivery from private party and Tesla. Tesla used car buying is one of the single worst consumer experiences on the face of the earth. Private party car buying is whatever you make of it on most cases plus you can see and drive before buying.

Asking for pictures (which will just be the same ones they email you when you request them prior to buying... nothing specific and no requests) is NOT the same as actually seeing the car in person and test driving it before committing to buying.

Tesla posts pictures of most used cars on their website which is a welcome development. But there's still no info about battery condition and you can't even really look at the car. More importantly, your money is not refundable - they might allow you to change it to another car and in some cases might even refund it but in general, money put down for used Teslas are not refundable so you have to roll the dice on them

I bought my model S last year through the CPO program. 2015 P85D with all options available for under $50,000. I can't find one now with the same option at the same price. I'm not sure there is a recent price drops of Tesla used vehicles.

And remember that when you bought your P85D, a new Performance car cost like $130k. now it costs $100k and yet used P85D prices go up? Makes no sense

People put too much weight in the used value based on new pricing and then don't understand when they don't follow the exact same price path. One important example is used has more to do with supply v demand which isn't case with new. When there's a massive amount of inventory available buyers tend to pick and choose and discounts usually are the only way to motivate them to buy. When there's not as many cars available sellers will pay more for what they want to get it. Pretty simple. Just because new cars go up or down in price doesn't affect cars that are selling to people who are shopping in the price range of cars that cost 1/3 as much. It makes perfect sense.

You're talking as if someone looking to buy a P85D is gonna be checking out the prices for new P100D cars. They won't, but you know who will? People looking to buy a used P100D. Here's an obvious chain:

1. Before P100D price cuts new P100Ds cost about $125k and used ones about $95k
2. P100D price cuts lowered the price of a new one to $100k but it took a while for used ones to catch up. Meaning for a used P100Ds cost as much as new ones which of course makes no sense.
3. Now used P100Ds are also down in price to about $75k.
4. This is now VERY close to used P90D prices. (There are used P90Ds on Tesla's site that are more expensive than some used P100Ds) There's a huge difference between P90D and P100D car wise. If I'm looking to drop $70k on a P90D I will definitely consider putting in $5k more and getting a huge upgrade to P100D. So now there'll be MUCH less demand for P90Ds at this pricing because it makes no sense.
5. P90D prices are gonna have to go down to for adjusted demand.
6. If P90D goes down, so does P85D.
7. Same way, if P85D goes down, the already small price difference between a P85D and a 85D will be gone, so 85D will go down also.
8. This reverberates through the entire lineup.

It might take some time but it has to happen. Also, a lot of those things are happening at the same time.

Expect that they floored it from every light but that it does not matter. It's not like a ICE vehicle that wears down when you redline it too much. As long as it has a decent amount of drivetrain warranty left it's not your problem Tesla will replace the motor or battery if they fail.

Look for a good condition interior/body.

Tesla is turning on Ludicrous for used car sales (when applicable) even if they were not previous Ludicrous. So for these cars, this means there is no chance of "ludicrous abuse" from previous owner.

(you can tell which cars because in the pix, the battery size take does not yet have the underline)
