The first one that is the small station is called J1772, and yes, no problem charging with that. I think the cars still come with the adapter for that. It's going to be a bit slow, like maybe 20 miles per hour.

Thanks for the feedback. If you mean 20 miles of driving for each hour of charging, that is not a bit slow, that is glacial. :) It is also a little disappointing. Moms is one place I go regularly, so if it was effective charging, that would have been a nice fit. Sounds like that is not the case.

The second big station, I can't quite see what kind of handles those are. There are two types for those DC fast charging stations. One is CCS, and Tesla doesn't have any kind of adapter. But the other is CHAdeMO, and Tesla does sell an adapter for $450 that can use that.
CHAdeMO Adapter
A lot of those stations with the two cords like that are one of each handle type, so that looks like you could use the CHAdeMO side if you want to go for that adapter.

I did not realize how big a deal the handles are. Let me see if I can get a picture of the handle. Thanks again.

No need for another picture, the plug share listing will tell you all the details. For example if this is the one you are looking at (I think it is)

PlugShare - Find Electric Vehicle Charging Locations Near You

The listing says that it has one CHAdeMO cord and one CCS cord, just like what @Rocky_H said.

So yes you can the CHAdeMO adapter on this station.

I spoke with the Tesla X owner in my building. Interesting, he said he mostly hunts up free charging opportunities in the area. He works under a mile from the condos, so he does not need to charge up as often as I would (34 mile round trip to work, 3-4 times per week). On the weekends, he is also able to plug into a 110 socket at work and leave the car plugged in overnight. Still, on the whole it seems manageable.

Switch from Mom's to Harris-Teeter?

Perhaps. I took another look at Plug-Share. I see that it can tell you when a space is free at the given charging station. That would make a huge difference to me. I can possibly park near the charging stations (both of which are typically occupied) and when one becomes free, walk over and move the car (the near-buy parking spaces are in part reserved for greener cars, which should help). Still, a very long charging process, and currently there is only one supercharger anywhere near me. It is about a 20 minute drive from where I work, so manageable, but not optimal. That said, I think the odds of them adding charging stations near where I live are high, though it is not a charging station until it is a charging station. Are people typically required to move their cars from a charging station after they are charged?

Any Electrify America stations near you? They are super charger level power and are popping up in places like Walmart parking lots!

Most of the SC's (Tesla and others) charge an "idle fee" for time connected after charging is complete. As Level 2 stations typically are not networked there is no way to do this. But, of course, common decency requires that you vacate a charger when you are finished using it. Some people when they leave the vicinity of a charging car, adopt the practice of leaving a note or sign on the windshield that says something like "If you need this charger call this number" followed by a phone number. If the charger is networked you will get an e-mail or text message telling you that the car is almost finished or finished charging.

Thanks. Since Plug Share could tell me when the charge stations at work were vacant, I assume that means they are not level 2. I hope they charge for staying passed fully charged. I have noticed that the chargers are usually taken, but I have not noticed whether or not the same cars are involved. I am going to monitor it for a bit. As I mentioned before, not far from where I live a Royal Farm has a charging station, but the Tesla person said it would only charge at a rate of around 30 miles per hour, even though it says "fast charger" on it. Pic again attached.

You can't really assume that any more than you can assume a Level 3 charger will be networked. It is more likely that a Level 3 will be than a Level 2 is about the best you can say. Several of the Level 2 chargers have WiFi capability which means they are accessible through the internet and I expect that's what you have encountered.

A 30 mi/hr charge rate implies about 10 kW for an X. I would take what the Tesla owner told you seriously but I would also go to PlugShare's page and look this charger up then read through the CheckIns. I'm guessing you are talking about the one at 6201 Pulaski Highway as that's the only one I found that has a Chademo/CCS at a Royal Farms. As you will see if you do that Teslas have charged there at over 40 kW in the past and at the same time drivers of other EV's have experienced slower that usual charging rates. I guess this station is just a bit spotty. But they charge by the kwh at a pretty reasonable rate compared to many of the non Tesla fast chargers.

Again I think of the Tesla SC near Fort McHenry. It's only 7 miles from that Royal Farms (but through the tunnel). You would know better whether that's a viable location for you to charge.

That will charge your car at about 160 miles per hour if you have the CHAdeMO adapter, which is $450. If you don't, you can't charge there.

We were driving around the Quebec countryside and came to one of those little information stations with maps of the local area etc. I noticed there was a CHAdeMO station there and asked my wife if we should charge there. "How much will it cost?" (she's of Scottish descent). My answer: "Depends on how much charge we take but about $235". I had to explain that while this seemed a lot it reduced the cost of our previous CHAdeMO charge from $461 to $236.

Charge a few more times and it will be peanuts! Worth another Quebec trip! :)

Well the capital cost of the next charge will be only $150 and reduce the capital costs of the other two to that same level. And I can offset what I pay for the electricity to some extent by getting a free charge on the way home at a dairy that has a destination charger and the most fantastic ice cream.

Thanks again for all of the feedback. I am a little unclear on the CHAdeMO adapter. Here are some pix from a local "DC Fast Charger"

with two "plugs." Which one takes the CHAdeMO adapter?
