Configuration of 20 Inch Wheels & Tires

I ended up configuring 21”, and nav range is slightly less optimistic. The car is overly optimistic by default so it’s nice just for reality’ sake. I’ll put a few pics below but I have 20” staggered Model x wheels with 245/40 ; 275/35 Conti DWS06 Plus. I couldn’t be happier after a year and 20,000 miles, perhaps 50% tread remains and they are still quiet. This tire in particular is so smooth and quiet, grippy, and looks great. I’ll get the same tire next time around. Big improvement over the previous DWS06.

I am loving what you did here! I have nearly the identical twin to your car except I am picking up some silver X slipstreams tomorrow. Can you confirm that the Conti DWS06 Plus tires are the XL version? This is what I can find locally and want to make sure I am on the right track..

Yes they are XL. That was part of my consideration, having had maybe a dozen flats in 8-9 years on 21”. Getting the load rating increase to both wheels (Model X wheels have higher load rating) and tires (XL).

I bought my tires from Tire Rack and bought the warranty for each. I’ve used 3 of 4 warranty claims lol. A pothole took out both right tires, only scraped the wheels. Later, a bubble formed in the sidewall of another tire. Ever since I haven’t had issues. LA has the worst potholes/roads after a lot of rain, and that’s when it occurred.

What rim size did you go with? Any issues with going down a size in width? Do you have much rim protection?

I am going with 20's and really wanted to go with the DWS06 Plus rather than Michelin. I was concerned the only fitment option would be going down a bit in width and the car seems traction limited (especially on the front) with the stock 19" all season Contis.

The DWS06 Plus has a wider section width if I remember correctly, so it has a very Michelin PSS style round sidewall (see my front tire pic).
The model x wheels with my current tires have more sidewall protection than the factory 21x8” turbines, but as you can see in the photo I’ve somehow scraped them up quite a bit without damaging the tire. Oh well.
When I first installed the 20” setup it took some time and changes to suspension setup before it felt just right.
Current setup
F 20x9” 245/40-20 +10mm spacer, -1.1 camber
R 20x9.5” 275/35-20, -1.6 camber
Lowered 1” (?) via lowering links

Thanks for sharing. How far off is the speedometer?

The load rating is lower than factory, did you have any issues getting them mounted?
Actually load rating of factory 21” Conti DW Xl tires was 1,565, whereas the fronts on 20” are 1,709, rears are 1,874.

There’s a website where you can punch in the info for your wheels and tires and get all of that info.

Thanks. Any issues with speedometer error?
Not at all. The OD of the tire is within .1”, a larger variance can be found between tires of the same size from different brands. The higher the speed the greater the variance. Just driving across the country the radars that show your speed would readout 1-2mph slower than what my cruise control read.

Just to make sure the DWS load ratings are adequate, I ran the numbers for the tires to help others as well who might be considering this. For the 20" at 99/102 or 1709/1874 pound frt/rear. I ran the numbers for GVWR on my car and for max load per axle, I'd need a min load rating of 90/97 with 1322/1609 pounds frt/rear. So the DWS+ have a fair amount of load capacity left even if not as much as the stock 19's. So I shouldn't have any issues getting them installed. They are really anal here when mounting tires and wouldn't even deviate from the stock tire pressure on another Tesla.

Thanks for the info on the speedo. I am in Texas and there often isn't a lot of headroom between what the speed limits are and what AP will do. When AP was limited to lower speeds a few months ago it was a total cluster. So if AP is capped at 80 mph (supposedly to be raised soon) and your speedo is reading high, there are a lot of Texas roads where you can't use AP at all without being a rolling road block. Some highways have speed limits as high as 85 mph. So that might put the actual speed with AP at about 77-78 and traffic will be at least 10 mph faster than what AP will run. Not an issue in a lot of other places.

Oh I understand the load rating for stock being so high for you: 19 vs 21 for me. Load rating on 21’s is literally below the threshold for safety! According to tire rack.

I tested my ph with gps and there’s some lag on gps, but I’m 2 mph slower at 82mph. So at 41 I’m 1 mph slower. This is not scientific but seems accurate. I dont have AP so it’s not a concern for me.

What tire pressure are you running? I've done the exact same setup (20x9 F and 20x9.5 R) (245/40 and 275/35). Currently I'm running 40PSI in front and 42 in Rear
42/42 for about 15 months now, haven’t thought much about it. Every tire rotation or alignment, etc, they’re gonna air it back up to 42/42 cause that’s what’s on my door. I’ve found traction to be ample for my driving, and comfort difference between 42/40 isn’t noticed by me. For staggered, wider wheels, my efficiency is almost identical. Maybe 2-3% less efficient, with room for error.
