Considering a used or CPO '17 X. Couple questions

Morning all. Been spending some time on the 3 page as have been considering a new 3, or a used/CPO X.

Tesla loaning me a 3 Performance overnight tomorrow, so will help somewhat in the decisions. Had all but planned to go that route until the dealer offered me some time in an X.. Car enthusiast.. Have owned it all from Lotus to GT-R to a handful of Vettes, Porsche, etc... As much a tech guy which is what got me finally thinking Tesla.. the guys on the 3 page have been INCREDIBLE! While I still weigh in on that, love some X input.

Keeping it on the X.

USED/CPO '17 options in the low, mid $70's right now. All with, mostly good miles.. 10-18k. I have debated new, especially for tax incentives, but more than wanting to go right now.. Equally equipped new with same options at nearly $90k in comparison.

With that, have 2 models I am looking in particular at. Both '17 75D, with only minimal differences that I can see in description. Both auto pilot enabled which was a must for me. Was hoping for a vin decoder to see options installed, but the primary one I had for Tesla seems more limited. Someone recommend one otherwise?

Have a question about audio options. "Ultra High Fidelity Sound." I don't see a difference when attempting a build out, but were there audio options for the '17 X? (As someone that will deeply miss the sound of his exhaust, I am hoping for an audio experience that will make me forget that.. Even if partially going the aftermarket route. (Was thoroughly impressed with the audio on the 3 Performance we tested.)

Questions about upholstery.. Leather vs Textile.. I have had both in other cars, but opinions? Durability, smell, comfort?

Backs of seats.. The leather model I am seeing has a gloss back where as the textile has a... color match plastic look. This the norm between the 2 upholstery options? Such a minor thing, but the gloss black just looks so nice.

Love some input on this as I continue to weight further options and questions.

Buying a used Tesla is different from for example a good 2 year old German car. Tesla has no model years, they continually innovate. Older car will have many older components including older version of autopilot (2.0 instead of 2.5), older MCU. Also, consider $7500 federal tax credit which you won’t get with a used car. Depending if you own your business, you may consider section 179 deduction (see a long separate thread about this) which could significantly reduce overall price for MX.

They discontinued glossy seat backs a while ago (over a year?). My first X had them and they were a pain. They scratch very easily. I really like the matte ones in my new X.

Sound: may threads on this. My first X had regular sound, my current X has premium. I do hear a big difference.

Seats: Tesla doesn’t use leather in current cars. They use vegan leather. I have black in my current car and really like it. I have several friends who have textile seats and like them too. To me they don’t feel as premium.

Lastly, coming from Porches and Lotus you should really look at a performance version (unless this is your baby vagon :). P is exilirating.

Thanks for this sir. For the record, the unit I am considering is a 12/17 build date model. Not sure if that assists in maybe giving me input on component install. I've asked the dealer to check on the Sirius/XM, which I know is the indicator of the ultra high fidelity.

I do know the value and quality of leather over textile and see the benefit of each...

Regarding performance.. Big believer in controlled speed, but now residing back in my home town of Orlando where speed and twisty roads is very tough to be had.

Could you give me your thoughts on a 12/17 model builds? End of year `17 models.

I am sorry, I don’t track MX changes by month. You will probably have to do some digging through the forums. 12/17 likely doesn’t have HW 2.5 and has old MCU. Shiny seat backs you already know about. Good luck with your purchase.

What are your insurance rates for a "P" X? Thinking of going from MS90d to MXP100D. Thanks

12/17 build u get AP2.5 which is good..u won’t get MCU2 whic is fine as V9 makes things run quicker ..my 2018 was built in feb this year and later 2017 builds are decent quality. Also late 2017 you won’t get real leather which is not a bad thing I had real leather in both my S and prefer the fake leather in X...textile is also not bad as most of seat is covered in the fake leather ..

I have a December 2017 delivered X75. Love it. Has 2.5 hardware do I've got dashcam functionality but the screen is still slow to load maps-satellite-traffic when zooming in and out and rotating. Granted I don't do this much but if you're a tech guy it's very annoying compared to Model 3. Google videos of the difference. With the X you get 2 displays which I prefer. The more traditional dash display and 17inch screen. On the dash you will always have the 360 view of car in lane with surrounding vehicles. The left side can display something else but will default to vector navigation if active. The right side can also display something else which I have set to tire pressures. So technically in the X you can have more information displayed at 1 time than the Model 3 if you don't mind looking at 2 different screens.

All great items..

We are still delicately walking the fence. As mentioned, I have a performance model 3 on loaner tonight, starting at 5, so will tell me a lot more... Also, heavily leaning toward the X right now, as the fiancee seemed to love it a bit more..

There are 2 models I am strongly considering.. Both well sub-20k miles, 12k and 17k. One being a 12/17 build, other a 3/17 build. Went to dealer today requesting build spec on the two. Confirmed that the '12 does have 2.5, but failed to ask if the '3 did.. (Assuming not from responses here.?) The '12 was white in color with the '3 being red, '3 had leather and ultra high fidelity, while the '12 had textile and base stereo.

So really deciding between hardware of the 2.5, leather vs textile, '12 vs '3 build, white vs red, ultra high def vs base...

Decisions, decisions. ;)

The 3/17 build won’t have ap2.5 ..if that is important to u (ie u get dash with 2.5) that is currently the only know differentiation other than underlying hardware that is different that doesn’t do anything for now ..I personally would opt for later build ..the real leather doesn’t look great after some time if not taken care of

So have had my loaner Model 3 Performance for a few hours now. The performance is.. Well, stunning. Not sure I am in love with the fit and finish to be honest??? Compared to my time in the X.. More and more, feel my decision is leaning toward the X....

I can only speak for the X, But definately go with the sound upgrade. Also based on your car history you really should try to look at performance models, all performance models include majority of premium upgrades including sound.

I should of also mentioned, im a fairly new owner, but when i speak to some model 3 owners at the superchargers, a few had mentioned they wish they got the X.

Since I am adding a vehicle to the fleet if you will, price is relevant.. Just cannot see adding that amount of pennies for the performance.. COMPLETELY believe what the performance is capable of, but just cannot appreciate that performance down here in Orlando anymore. 75D is the sweet spot for me with price and performance if you will.. '17 model 75D's in the low $70k range is about my cutoff with the other cars currently have.

Understood, with that in mind if sound is important (there is a noticeable difference in sound clarity, and mild bass in premium) however that upgrade usually costs 5k, you could do after market audio (would definately try to find audio specialist who had done teslas before) and be at around the same cost 5k+, also allowing you to customize to your specific taste more bass/clarity etc.

The sub in premium i beleive is located behind the passenger falcon seat in front of the trunk. If aftermarket id definately try to find a pic of exactly how its mounted and avoid a custom encloser. Reason being you dont want to end up hearing some wierd buzzing/vibrating in panels etc, due to design and location. And you definatley DO NOT want to add a sub to the trunk door due to its sensativity/weight calibration etc.

Also it doesnt hurt to call around tesla dealership/showrooms and ask about showroom models, i personally bought a showroom model and it saved me alot, (it still had factory plastic on it) granted i was looking at performance models, but perhaps not performance models and/test drive cars might offer a larger deal?

And finally im sure you may of heard, but dont actually look at the year model of a tesla, yoy actually need to find the month the car was made, tesla releases its changes randomly. Example:
There are actually 2 different 2018 models, those made before and after March, there were some mild changes to the falcon door sensors and button look etc. Small changes but knowing this you may want to look into the 2017 model options based on month and still if any perticular possible model changes took place

Thanks sir.. Correct on the year. I have decided on only entertaining a late '17 model.. November/December build.
