Considering Home Delivery?

My MY order is my second Tesla; first was June 2019 for M3 which was delivered to me as a matter of course, although I'm 300 mi from Rocklin, CA distribution center.

For this car, however, I was offered a number of pickup options for the weekend starting Feb 12, extending to Feb 14. Home delivery was not one of my options.

Family members were discouraging the trip since it would require a hotel stay, so I inquired and the SA said it would be possible to deliver to me for a fee of $750, to which I said yes. Delivery date was to be today, Feb 18. Fine.

Next day my account page stated I had a balance of $808.XX to pay, I paid that, probably tax on the $750 I thought, or maybe SA had been misinformed about the cost, whatev.

I expected a call from a driver today saying he was on the way, but none came, so I went on Chat. Previous attempts to contact the SA were futile. Voicemails not returned. Chat informed me that my account is paid up and delivery will be on Mar 5, not today. Mar 5. Seventeen days from today.

I played a long shot and called Corte Madera, it was 4:45, my luck isn't very good reaching anyone at that hour. The human I spoke with said the car was enroute to Corte Madera from which it would be trucked to me. Seems a shipment with room for my car had not occurred since I'd made the arrangement for home delivery, well that's how it goes, they've got lots of cars to transport, I'm no one special, certainly.

I asked if he'd call me when it gets to Corte Madera, I'll come for it. It's a round tripper in one day, approximately 11 hours.

Do be aware if you're thinking of home delivery, things can go south fast, and human contact can be well nigh impossible.

Sorry to hear about the lack of communications from Tesla. I have been a happy Tesla owner for over 6 years, but must admit customer communications has always been their weakness. I took home delivery 3 weeks ago in San Rafael (6 miles north of Corte Madera). It went smoothly for me. No complaints. I even had a Kia Niro EV tradein that the guy drove off in. Since you are a long ways from a Tesla location I can see how delivery can be a stressful situation. Please update us after you take delivery. Good luck!

Ouch! 3rd party carrier direct used to be free (when I got my 2019 Model 3) and used to be anyone over 200 miles I think. Now it's 220 miles AND it's a fee based service! I can't understand why they would still have the distance requirement if they're charging a fee now.

They do wait to assign a common 3rd party carrier to do the shipment though, so I'm not surprised the delay is 5 to 15 days. When I got my Model 3 I selected 3rd party carrier direct from the start and even though the car was ready it still took probably a week or so to schedule the delivery.

It was still free when I was purchasing my Y in October of 2020, but they had increased the distance to 220 miles and I'm like 208 miles away. Honestly I probably would have paid a fee if that had been possible back then, but to still have the distance restriction that's a little odd.

(I ultimately had a 3rd party pick the vehicle up, drop it off for full detail and PPF, and then set up my own enclosed transport for about $650 for ~200 miles to me. It was a hassle, and I got extremely lucky that the sales manager had actually done this for a few other customers before and was established with the person that picked up my car, so they probably bent some rules a little to allow it to happen, but boy oh boy was it so incredible easy. For how many Tesla owners get PPF and stuff Tesla should offer that as a factory option to be applied by service centers, or partner with good local detail shops and make it a seamless process before delivery, or before shipment to the customers home. It felt like a million bucks was pulling up to me when the Model Y was unloaded on a Friday afternoon and such an easy day. Way way way way better then stupid normal dealerships!)

I'm trying to use 3rd party delivery as well and am having a bit a frustrating experience too. I live in Upstate NY about 300 miles from the Mt Kisco location where my car is. The car arrived sometime last weekend. I had been in regular contact with the team there. Very responsive. Then after I sent my insurance info and paid the 3rd party delivery fee on the 15th, I got crickets. No communication even after a couple e-mails and calls this past week. To be fair, there was a snowstorm which likely snarled delivery logistics up. But was just looking for some communication on expected ETA and confirmation that everything was completed. Frustrating to know that after a year and a half (I ordered a 7 seater), my car is just sitting there on the other side of the state!

Anyway, I dropped them an e-mail this morning acknowledging the bad weather and indicating that I'd rent a car one way and pick up my Model Y next Saturday, and that I'd need a refund on the delivery fee. Got an e-mail from the SA about an hour later indicating they're working with their transport companies to get the Carrier Delivery lined up. I would prefer carrier delivery to a 12 hour Saturday ordeal, but I also don't want to wait for an indeterminate amount of time on delivery logistics. We'll see where things go from here....

I'm sure that bad weather in the NY area played a part, but I'm annoyed that once I completed everything on my end, the communication from the SAs dropped to zero. Hopefully a minor blip. Fingers crossed the rest of the experience goes well.

The clock would start on monthly payments when you’ve signed all paperwork and made full payment. (Either full cash, sent your :rd party financing, or full down payment and financed through Tesla.)

Carrier Direct requires essentially accepting the vehicle before they will contract with a delivery company so the clock starts then (or as soon as they process the paperwork.)

If someone is considering this, I wouldn’t wait for a delivery date before mentioning you want carrier direct. Start the process as early as you can. In my case I was handed off to a Tesla office in Vegas (even though my car was in Seattle and I live in WA) who organized the carrier direct. Expect to wait one to two weeks, that might actually just be a standard for window that transport companies give so they can try to load a carrier up with a few vehicles going the same direction.

When I finally was told I was assigned a carrier it was about three days before the vehicle would be delivered to my house, but about 11 days after I had submitted all documents and payment and was in the “we’re looking for a carrier phase.”

In addition, when I privately organized a transport company, they asked that I schedule about a week at minimum before The day I wanted it delivered but more like two weeks. Even though I had paid and set up my transport with the comp, I wasn’t assigned a truck for another 6 or 7 days, THEN got assigned a truck about 2 days before the actual delivery date.

I kinda figure the logistics behind transport companies is just a little fuzzy and includes a lot of waiting to try to pack together common shipments... not like FedEx where it’s routine routes and you just had over your item to be shipped.

I took a more assertive tone in my Chat, and as a result, got a call from a Delivery Specialist on Friday last, saying they were on the case and would let me know when things were squared away. Nothing heard Monday, or this morning, so I called Corte Madera Sales Center where they ascertained the car was on the property and gave me options to come pick it up myself; I opted for Saturday, 3 p.m. This has been better than banging my thumb with a hammer, but nothing like the smooth experience in 2019 when Tesla simply delivered the car, Bada Boom.

Senior Day at Eureka Natural Foods in Mckinleyville; I normally make this run in a Tesla costing tens of thousands. Today I went on my Rad Power Bike.

I wanted to add a quick update on my delivery experience. Got a call on Tuesday the 23rd that they'd arranged with a driver to bring my car up. The car arrived around 8:00 PM that day. I took my time checking it over (thanks to those who put together delivery checklists!), and it was nearly flawless.

Only very minor concern was that the cover to the charge port doesn't sit exactly flush. Haven't noticed it again since delivery. Panel gaps were all in excellent shape and no flaws that I could find in the paint. The interior was perfect too. Was honestly worried about what would happen if there had been issues, but nothing even close to that materialized. Been having a lot of fun over the past few days! Worth the wait. Best of luck today Blucenturion!

Rochester NY here! Considering doing the same as you - home delivery since Mt. Kisco is the closest. However I have concerns about what happens if there are finish issues with the car when it arrives and they are severe enough to decline delivery. Or I'm assuming home delivery doesn't allow you to take it for a quick test drive to confirm that all is well, and it drives straight and feels good? So essentially you look the car over, if it visually looks good you sign off and the truck is gone and anything with the drive of the car or otherwise is now your issue?

It's too bad there isn't any local pickup options in Rochester.

I am in the same exact boat as you! I'm in Buffalo and I asked if they could bring the car to Rochester (service center in Henrietta) but they wouldn't. I am going to use carrier direct because my delivery date lines up with my wife's due date for our son (3/23). Guess we will see how this goes. I'm concerned as well about the build quality and what happens since I cannot really reject the car (?)

@ilikemypizza First off, nice user name. If you don't mind, let me/us know what ends up happening with your delivery (and congrats on the baby!). I also checked if they could deliver to the service center in Henrietta (where I recently test drove a Y). From this forum and other sources, it seems hit or miss on what happens with delivery and quality control. I've read of folks finding issues at pickup and having them corrected on the spot from the service center, and then folks who had to take delivery and then schedule service at a later point to have them fixed. I understand that the Mt. Kisco location won't make on the spot repairs or adjustments if issues are found at delivery, which isn't ideal.

@Wilber quick question did they deliver your Tesla on a flatbed or someone drove it to your home?

Home Delivery (within ~20 or 30 miles) is usually driven out by a Tesla employee who than ubers home

Carrier Direct (over ~220 miles away and a fee based service) is a 3rd party transport company that can be anything from a F350 and trailer up to a semi truck car carrier

@ilikemypizza How did your delivery end up going?

Nice, glad to hear! Enjoy!
@ilikemypizza Rochester here as well, How long between the car getting to Mt Kisco and your delivery actually arriving ? My car got to Mt Kisco on Monday the 21st, just trying to get an idea on when I may be expecting it here ? They said the transport company had already been sourced and they are waiting for the truck to be full before it's picked up ?

Communication has been abysmal with them. I got an email monday saying the car was there and they are starting to source the transport, i replied right away asking how long, but they never replied about that and just let me know today after a 4 day wait on the email that the transport had been sourced and it's waiting to fill up to get to Rochester.

Thanks!

It actually went really well! If I could have, I probably would have picked it up for the experience. But the carrier direct was great. Driver was super cool, it came on a small tractor trailer. He told me to gun it down the street (my dad was with me) haha.

Do you think the delivery person brought the car from Mt Kisco? I've seen a couple of mentions about delays while transports fill but I was told it would be a single vehicle (mine) on a small open flatbed or equivalent that would have no trouble on country roads. I just got an email from Ian Laurel who leads Carrier Direct Service in Mt. Kisco reminding me that I should:

... anticipate the car may have been exposed to elements on-route. (Possible Bug splatter, and exposure to pebbles and salt) Additionally, your vehicle will not arrive fully charged, it will lose 20%-40% on its travel to your location.

It really seems as if Tesla is trying to frighten strongly encourage folks into in-person pickups.

PS. I don't really blame Tesla for this, it's the fault of the New York Auto Dealers. They're the ones lobbying against more Tesla sales/delivery locations.
