Considering Switching Delivery to Factory Pickup

I've been chatting with the DS about switching my delivery from AZ to a factory pickup and taking a California vacation before returning home. The vehicle would still be registered as a AZ vehicle. As I'm leasing and both CA and AZ charge sales tax on the lease stream I think that the only financial penalty would be that I owe a higher California sales tax on the first monthly payment. Am I missing something?

Thank you

Long time lurker, but had to register and hop on for this particular thread. I'm expecting to take delivery of an X soon and was pondering a similar pick-up situation. I am located on Long Island, NY and contact my local delivery specialist about doing a factory pick-up and then doing an epic cross country road trip with the MX.

The rep informed me that because I was leasing, this would not be possible and if I wanted to do a factory pick-up I would need a California address, and incur significantly higher taxes. I tried pushing back a little for some clarifying information as I didn't believe this to be true (the address bit, I understand the taxes portion) but pretty much got no real answer. Eventually, I acquiesced and decided to just go ahead with my normal plans of a NY delivery.

Anyways, I say this not to dissuade you but rather to find out if this actually works out for you because then it would give me a bit of hope that I can wrangle my way into a similar situation.

I can confirm that it is possible and I have switched my delivery to factory pickup. My delivery specialist has been changed from my local service center to Fremont. Delivery window is currently end of April/mid May.

For me the tax difference is less than $100. I confirmed with a Tesla Leasing Specialist the tax impact and both AZ and CA tax the lease stream and only Fremont sales tax is due on the capital cost reduction fee (AZ tax would have been due @ 7.75%) and on the acquisition fee of $695 (AZ tax was not due). Based on this and the minimal increase in tax rate I had my order switched.

nh-srt8, Good choice with factory pickup! In Fremont you have the option to take a factory tour before the pickup. The tour lasts a bit over an hour and is informative and amazing. For most of the tour you are in an electric tram that pulls you around the enormous factory. After the tour you are met by your deliver specialist and they handle the paperwork, go over your car with, then you go for a test drive with them.

When I asked about factory pickup, my DS told me factory tours are booked through the end of the month. I am going to clarify later this week when I confirm production status and ask about just pickup at factory and defer the tour to May when I will be in the Bay area next.

I elected the Factory delivery, you still need to pay the delivery fee, but got the factory tour and drove down to San Diego via Superchargers. Stopped at every one of them just because I could but not necessary. I would not recommend end of month or end of quarter delivery. That was when my delivery was and they were pushing out 200 deliveries a day for 3 days and I think I missed some of that personalized delivery service I would have gotten if I would have taken delivery at the Service Center, my DS wasn't even there for the delivery.

I switched to pickup from factory instead of Los Angeles about two months ago after receiving an advice from a DS at the Meet the X event in Burbank. My owner portal showed estimated delivery date of 3/24 - 3/31. Do you recommend a hotel to stay a couple and 4-year-old boy near Fremont, CA? Thanks.

I would also like to know thoughts on a hotel. My plan currently is to fly in the evening before pickup and stay one night at the Marriott on the other side of the freeway and use the shuttle to the factory.

I'm flying into SJC and Uber'ing to the factory for the 11AM tour, the getting my car. I plan on driven to Paso Robles the first evening and then home the next morning.

BTW, this is happening on Monday and Tuesday next week. :)

Sounded like you have a good plan. When did you reserve your factory tour? My DS said I should book the factory tour well in advance of my arrival. I plan to come one day before the day of the tour and pickup which I'm not sure of right now. I'm debating whether to drive my family up in a rental car and drop the car off in Frement or fly the three of us to SJC and drive our X back home in LA.

I had not heard a word from my DA until this past Wednesday (the 16th), on Thursday I confirmed for this coming Monday with the factory tour @ 11AM for up to four people, but it looks, like it will be just me.

Southwest was about $275 from SNA.

Picking up my X on Sunday afternoon at the factory. Sure it's been posted elsewhere, but here is the info on tour requirements:
