Cost to charge at home

Instead of giving EV State Rebates which each state struggles with how much that will cost them, I think certain states that vote for green initiatives will instead have such funds go to funding roads driven by EV's ; as opposed to having higher registration costs for EV's.

Right now the batteries are too expensive and the cars cost too much for full adoption ; having increased registration fees on top of that will really hamper the technology adoption ; in the US at least.

Yes, exactly on the adoption. The federal and state tax incentives are decreasing or are gone. People won't bite if taxes are actually increased on EVs. That would be a shame.

Those type of sock it to the middle class type use taxes (if you paid based on mileage driven to the state) is exactly what gets politicians voted out of office ; so don't see it happening any time soon.

Those aren't the only two choices. The simplest is to simply report your odometer reading each year... Sure it's not perfect, but better than the state using GPS.

Most of my miles are driven outside of my home state. Fair and accurate reporting would require some sort of log book.

Or just ignoring that level of detail for the sake of simplicity. The fuel tax doesn't necessarily allocate the amount you pay proportionately to each state correctly, either.

Right.
Germany famously had one of the highest fuel tax rates in Europe, so long-haul truckers would fuel up at the last truck stop in the Netherlands and drive through Germany without fueling again until they got to Switzerland. Of course, German politicians were outraged that people chose not to pay their high taxes.
