Pretty cool article. I wonder how long they spent making the trip. It doesn't say. If each one of those lightning bolts is 8 hours, a long time . Looks like fun. My wife and I did OH to CA via old 66 a few months back in my ICE and had a blast. Road trips are a good time.
That's a great article - totally inspiring. I love the idea of "chatting it up with locals" while the car charges, but with two young kiddos (3 and 1) we need to keep on movin! Looking forward to seeing how Elon makes out on his trip with is 5 KIDS! AH!
I am also hoping we get some blog like updates from Elon about his trip. That could be really entertaining. Hopefully it is not just a press release at the end saying he did it.
Me too especially considering the lack of superchargers. Without (or even with) that option or battery or car swaps it will be a long tough trip with five kids. My kids are much older and a long trip for us is still a few hours. Having driven home across the country in five days after 911 I am not sure it is that much fun unless you stop and enjoy things along the way. On the other hand he will be driving a Tesla. Although with little kids? Mmmm.
I met him at the Minneapolis service center. That was back in mid June. So probably around 4 months. He's part of the reason we're doing a trip to Toronto for Christmas.
What's a good app or site for finding RV locations? I have PlugShare & Chargepoint, but they aren't for RV camps.
Recargo lists RV parks that have 50A service. I don't know how complete the listings are, but there's a lot of them on there.
I'm quite impressed that he was 6' 5" and still comfortable sleeping in the back with his fiancé. Did not think the trunk was that roomy.
I had decent luck doing simple web searches, like: "RV parks Randle, WA" That's how I found 3 RV options within 10 miles of Mt. St. Helens.
The app's name is RV Parks the website is rvparking.com. The big lettering on the app icon is rvparking.com.
I had also pondered the idea of touring the US and sleeping in the back of the car, as I figured it would totally be possible. Sure enough...it's already been done! This kind of thing would not be for everyone, but it sounds damn fun to me.
Thanks. I've left a request that they make a Windows Phone app. I won't hold my breath waiting for it, but I can hope.
What's more interesting is if you have so much free time to do this long road trip around the country, how do you not have enough $ to spring for the 85 kWh battery?
