We need to distinguish between "authorities" and experts. Sadly, our political system gives us high office holders who know zip about virology or infectious diseases or how best to respond to them. The president and some governors are talking extremely dangerous nonsense and making the situation far worse to the degree that their political supporters disregard the experts in favor of their political ideology.

The experts are the people who actually know what they are talking about, and we should be following their recommendations.

you mean the same experts who have ruined countless lives with their bullshit dietary advice? thanks but no thanks. if there is one maxim it is that we know far less than we think we do. "experts" included.

let's just say that you can look at this pandemic from multiple perspectives. if there weren't so many with comorbidities that arise from the highly inflammatory processed foods diet that is so common nowadays there wouldn't be nearly as many deaths from this virus. there is much blame to go around. eat species appropriate food. you can thank me later.

Given diet still varies significantly between nations (especially in Asia where we have a decent bit of data) this doesn't seem to really hold up as an argument.

Our species are omnivores. All food is "appropriate" even if some might be better than others for various reasons.

Getting pretty far afield from basic virology now though... if Bob ate some Fritos has little to do with his going out during a quarantine and spreading disease or not.... (unless, I suppose, it's a trip to buy more Fritos...)

Contrary to many people's personal beliefs about their own food preferences, tooth and mouth structure studies have shown that we are actually "fruit-tarians". Of course, meat eaters will disagree. It doesn't matter. Our "species" eats everything, because it can. And we die younger, because some foods kill us.

Interestingly, the Bible declares we were all strict vegetarians for the first couple thousand years, and after the flood, due to lack of plant material, people ate the extra "clean" animals carried on the ark for that purpose and God declared meat was then part of the diet.

As a vegetarian, though, it is obvious that we do not need to be omnivorous.

Food guidelines have changed as we learn more. But the real problem is not that the dietary guidelines were or are seriously bad. The real problem is that Americans do not follow them. The typical American high-fat, high-salt, high-sugar, high-calorie, low-vegetable diet is absolutely not the diet that experts have been recommending.

Distrust of experts is the hallmark of pseudoscience. The person with no education in a given field who sees what he thinks are anomalies in the data and believes he understands their significance better than people who've spent a lifetime studying the subject. The armchair philosopher who finds one study that contradicts all the others and fails to realize that there are always outliers and that it's the preponderance of evidence that rules, or who are incapable of understanding the reasons for the results of the one outlier; so they make a youtube video ranting against "the establishment."

To the extent that bad diet contributes to poor health and exacerbates an illness, it's because Americans (and probably others) disregard the dietary advice, not because they follow it.

Pretty sure we were hunter gatherer for many thousands of years before we became agrarian and pretty sure we evolved canines to rip meat apart. Pretty sure the Bible has nothing to do with evolution. Let’s keep religion out of this discussion.

No. What tooth structure shows is that we evolved from frugivores. Our inability to synthesize vitamin B-12 shows that we have become dependent on animal-based foods. Humans have evolved the ability to subsist on a wide variety of foods, far more varied than our frugivorous arboreal primate ancestors.

It is true that meat is not essential for health, but we still need a source of B-12. For my part, I eat no meat and am very healthy. And most Americans eat far too much meat, which is primarily a problem because they're consuming too many calories and because the modern meat industry is an environmental disaster.

... pretty sure we evolved canines to rip meat apart.

Probably not. Our canines are way too small to be particularly useful for that. Apes have much larger canines than we do. Large canines probably evolved for fighting more than for eating, and as early hominids moved away from using their teeth for fighting, their canines shrank because they no longer conferred an evolutionary advantage.

It likely wasn't until the domestication of fire and the invention of spears that hominids began eating a significant amount of meat. We cannot digest it very well without cooking. We can digest raw meat, but not very well.

Humans began eating meat because we are opportunists. We're good at adapting to whatever conditions and resources are available. But we don't need meat, and in the 21st century meat production is an environmental disaster.

All I know is I switched to vegetarian about 6 weeks ago and never have eaten so much junk. It's easy not to eat meat but it's another thing not to eat processed foods all the time claim to be a vegetarian. Plant based is where its at, not Pop Tarts and pretzels.

Well, meat is a really rich source of energy and humans have evolved to want it as a part of our diet. We don't need it but it was a critical component of our survival in the past. I've linked a great article if you are interested.

The Evolution of Diet

One I got in my email today. I took molecular bio about 100 years ago but this all sounds pretty legit.

Information from Johns Hopkins about the Molecular Stability of the Virus

From Johns Hopkins Hospital:

The virus is not a living organism, but a protein molecule (RNA) covered by a protective layer of lipid (fat), which, when absorbed by the cells of the ocular (eyes), nasal or buccal mucosa (inside of your mouth), changes their genetic code. (mutation) and convert them into aggressor and multiplier cells.

  • Since the virus is not a living organism but a protein molecule, it is not killed, but decays on its own. The disintegration time depends on the temperature, humidity and type of material where it lies.
  • The virus is very fragile; the only thing that protects it is a thin outer layer of fat. That is why any soap or detergent is the best remedy, because the foam CUTS the FAT (that is why you have to rub so much: for 20 seconds or more, to make a lot of foam).
By dissolving the fat layer, the protein molecule disperses and breaks down on its own.
  • HEAT melts fat; this is why it is so good to use water above 25 degrees Celsius for washing hands, clothes and everything. In addition, hot water makes more foam and that makes it even more useful.
  • Alcohol or any mixture with alcohol over 65% DISSOLVES ANY FAT, especially the external lipid layer of the virus.
  • Any mix with 1 part bleach and 5 parts water directly dissolves the protein, breaks it down from the inside.
  • Oxygenated water helps long after soap, alcohol and chlorine, because peroxide dissolves the virus protein, but you have to use it pure and it hurts your skin.
  • NO BACTERICIDE OR ANTIBIOTIC SERVES. The virus is not a living organism like bacteria; antibodies cannot kill what is not alive.
  • NEVER shake used or unused clothing, sheets or cloth. While it is glued to a porous surface, it is very inert and disintegrates only
-between 3 hours (fabric and porous),
    -4 hours (copper and wood)
    -24 hours (cardboard),
  • 42 hours (metal) and
    -72 hours (plastic).
But if you shake it or use a feather duster, the virus molecules float in the air for up to 3 hours, and can lodge in your nose.
  • The virus molecules remain very stable in external cold, or artificial as air conditioners in houses and cars.
They also need moisture to stay stable, and especially darkness. Therefore, dehumidified, dry, warm and bright environments will degrade it faster.
  • UV LIGHT on any object that may contain it breaks down the virus protein. For example, to disinfect and reuse a mask is perfect. Be careful, it also breaks down collagen (which is protein) in the skin.
  • The virus CANNOT go through healthy skin.
  • Vinegar is NOT useful because it does not break down the protective layer of fat.
  • NO SPIRITS, NOR VODKA, serve. The strongest vodka is 40% alcohol, and you need 65%.
  • LISTERINE IF IT SERVES! It is 65% alcohol.
  • The more confined the space, the more concentration of the virus there can be. The more open or naturally ventilated, the less.
  • You have to wash your hands before and after touching mucosa, food, locks, knobs, switches, remote control, cell phone, watches, computers, desks, TV, etc. And when using the bathroom. Because the virus might still be on those surfaces.
  • You have to HUMIDIFY HANDS DRY from so much washing them, because the molecules can hide in the micro cracks. The thicker the moisturizer, the better.
  • Also keep your NAILS SHORT so that the virus does not hide there.

I thought Listerine was now something like 22% alcohol? I can't stop touching my stupid face/glasses/ears, etc. I need to wash my hands constantly! The more they tell me not to touch my face the more I do it!
