COVID Infects Tesla 12V batteries

With Elon's "the best service is no service" mantra, certainly 12v battery failures create a *lot* of service requests.

If the 12v was added to resolve issues of draining the traction battery, then they should be able to bypass the 12v when it's dead.

Certainly opening the tow hook port and using a 9v battery to pop the frunk isn't the best they can do. If they already had the roadster functioning without a 12v at all, they could just bypass it when dead and issue a persistent error... and make it *really easy* to self service.

They could easily. The catch is "Safety" they want the HV system off as much as possible. For that to happen you need a 12V battery. They chose a very small 12V battery for how much energy these cars use when off. This means that it discharges often and each discharge shortens the battery life. Lots of cycles = short life (especially for Lead acid)

We just did a EV conversion from lead acid batteries to Lithium. We did not use a 12V battery but instead have a low power converter to cover the 12V systems. To do this the HV battery is always connected to some thing. Our system was safe, but not as safe as Teslas...
