CPO model S and what to expect?

hey I’m thinking about getting a CPO model S and wondering what to expect.

Is the 2500 down still required? On a CPO or is that only part of a new car as the CPO car will be on the lot.

The model S 75 is a 2016 model and I’m looking at has ~22k miles and going for $49,600.

From my understanding the miles don’t really matter too much outside of normal wear and tear on exterior (tires, brakes...etc) as there is no engine...and being there are Tesla’s going over 300-400k miles now at 30-40% battery degradation (meaning the matter is only 60-70% efficient as it was new).

Anyways this is going to be my first car and I really want a model S my question is how much would I need to have upfront on day of purchase to get this car? I make roughly 5k a month after taxes in Cali...no living expense (family left me their home, rented rooms relatively cheap to close friends to cover basic expenses such as internet,water/power etc) my only expense is buy food out and maybe hookah flavs lol...

Really appreciate the help! I’m not the brightest apple when it comes to buying things so I wanted to come here and get advice from people who have experienced it first hand.

Have you physically seen the actual vehicle in person? I think there are links from others that go into detail as to what to look for when buying used, so that you can have a list of items you would like to see addressed. Pretty sure any wear and tear items are excluded, but doesn't hurt to ask! Also how much are you planning to put down? Even $10k down at 5 years loan is still north of $700/mo. so if you are comfortable with that not just now but for the next five years, go for it. Also, how much longer under warranty?

No I haven’t seen it in person just the photos for now it’s from Tesla dealership in LA though so I’d assume it’s not going to have major issues that aren’t stated. But it would be really helpful to have a list of what I should have or should potentially add if possible (software update?)

In terms of warranty it says this :

4 years / 50,000 miles

Limited Warranty

Covers 4 years or 50,000 miles from when you take delivery. Battery & drive unit warranty valid through June 2024.

Key features :

Key Features

  • GPS Enabled Homelink

The color is whitish like a metallic white? Based on the photo.

One thing to keep in mind - it's not CPO, it's used. Tesla does not do ANY refurbishments consistent with a traditional CPO program, nor will you find any reference to the CPO acronym in their current documentation.

The 4y/50k warranty is actually pretty awesome, but I honestly might encourage you to look for one with more miles. You'll get a 4y/50k warranty on pretty much any vehicle under 50k miles from Tesla, so to maximize your value proposition, getting something closer to 50k would get you something that's broken in (already had a few things replaced, drive train issues likely mostly taken care of), and the price should be SUBSTANTIALLY lower due to being higher mileage. Regardless of how EVs wear vs mileage, there is still the very accurate mindset that mileage will affect value.

Delivery specialists are 50/50 on how accommodating they are about due bills for additional damage and problems you find. Make sure to document everything, and be prepared to walk away from something if they don't want to address it.

Go get quotes from a BUNCH of credit unions for your financing. Tesla financing is high APR because it's convenient. I got my APR down to 1.8% by shopping around with CUs.

Ahh man some great info!!! Thank you!

I was considering buying a CPO in June to replace my existing S. Ended up buying a new P3D which I am happy with.

Part of the problem is the CPO cars (at least near me) are NOT kept at the Tesla store and you cannot physically see the car prior to purchase. The are kept is some storage lot off site. Yes, you have to put the deposit down, then reject the car if you don't like it during delivery. I had several newer "P" S models I was comparing but there was no way to compare them side by side. This was in Atlanta incidentally.

They would also not confirm any details (specifically details on battery pack), like specific part number. This is a big deal if buying a P90D incidentally. The would not take additional pictures either.

My prior P85 purchase was excellent and I did get multiple pictures and excellent customer service. I am guessing end of June was not a good time given the big push to unload M3's at that time. Hopefully your experience wil better.

As an aside, I paid only a little bit more for a loaded P3D which is an EXCELLENT car, so perhaps it worked out better for me after all.

I had a great experience with my “CPO” purchase back in May. Like others have stated you do have to put $2500 down. Keep in mind the funds are NOT refundable but they are transferable if the vehicle you receive doesn’t match what the pictures show.

tesla keeps all their used cars on manheim lots across the country and they do the pictures. They won’t take additional picture past the ones they’ve taken because it’s just not fed able for them to do so. Plus I don’t think they know a lot about EVs in general or some of the pics we’d like to see would already be there.

From what I'm seeing on the Tesla used inventory site, it explicitly says the $2500 is "fully refundable" (see attached). I would hope they would honour that since it's in writing on their site. See attached.

Yes the $2500 is fully refundable, at any time prior to you accepting the car. What I’m curious about is if the transportation fees get waived as well if you reject a car upon delivery? My advisor says yes, but it doesn’t state it anywhere.

That's interesting. Sounds like there could be a loop hole if you reject it after transportation and then wait for it to come back on used inventory again to avoid paying the transportation fees.

I stand corrected. This is a change from when I purchased mine in May and I think even a month or so ago.

I was told that the transport fee would have to be paid regardless if I accepted delivery or not. My suggestion would be to get your delivery person to put it in writing. Then they have to refund you!
