CPO registration issue

I have picked up my CPO from West Palm beach in Florida about a month ago. The advisor was based in California and was responsible for sending in California dmv paperwork.
One month later, my car is not in California dmv system as I have checked at AAA. My Florida temporary tags expire in 6 days. Has anyone gone through similar experience and what did Tesla do? If they give me bullshit answer or not give me California temp tags, I was thinking about asking for loaner. Thoughts?

My thread here may be helpful, but I picked my car up in NY, not CA. Over 1 month with CPO, still no title
TL;DR, the service center didn't have me do registration paperwork for my home state, which delayed me getting MD tags. It took a lot of back and forth with my SA for them to realize that, but once they figured out the issue they overnighted a temp tag as well as the paperwork they forgot to have me fill out.

Thank you, helpful thread, looks like many people got new temp tags. I am hoping they will do one from california which doesnt expire instead of one from Florida where I actually picked up the car.
Thank you again

It's happening to a TON of people.
I bought my CPO two weeks ago and they said they would do my registration. Then last night I got a letter in the mail saying they're not doing the registration (no explanation, just a 'we didn't charge you for it') and some documents they say are enough to register. But they aren't enough. According to my DMV website I need the title or similar to register the vehicle because it was bought out of state. UGH

It sounds like a lot of people are having this issue. I posted in another group about my struggles and many people responded that they had that problem too.

Where did you pick up your car at and how did you get out of state without paying and registering in that state? I assume CA - would appreciate info as there's a 90D I want in San Fran, but I live in VA.
Thanks,
DZM

Just know that if you get a car in CA, you'll be paying the CA 10% sales tax, then they'll send VA their portion and CA keeps the rest.

It's not quite 10% but it IS higher than many states. In fact, NV is higher by percentage but has a low cap which means lower overall tax for most expensive cars. Sales Tax Handbook says CA takes 7.5% sales tax on cars whereas NV takes 8.1%. It's just NV caps it at $950, so you never pay more than that in car sales tax in NV.

Looking for help from people who purchased a CPO Model S out of state. I found a CPO Model S out of state and was told by my local (NY) CPO advisor that I can't go to that state and purchase it because I'm a NY resident. This sounded very odd to me. She said that I have to have the car delivered to NY and pay a $2,000 delivery fee citing an agreement stating that Tesla's NY Sales license restricts them from selling

"any NY residents a vehicle outside of NY state lines. If we were to do so, our NY sales license would be subject to being revoked."

I explained that if they had a comparable car in NY, I would love to not go through the hassle of going to another state to purchase. But why would I not just take a day trip, trade in my current car (I already have a trade-in agreement through Tesla), and drive the CPO back to NY and register it here? She said I couldn't do that even if the car is as close a Massachusetts.

That doesn't make sense to me since I can go on any car lot in the country and buy a car. She explained because it's Tesla, they have a different license agreement with NY.

Any help? Am I being fed misinformation? I see above that people have had problems with getting their paperwork. Did you have problems purchasing the car and registering it in your home state?

This is very specific to New York. I think you will find other Tesla owners and enthusiasts who are IN New York might be more helpful.
Maybe you can go to this event and meet others face to face to chat: Tesla Owners Club New York State - ROC EV End-of-Year Celebration

Dealt with the same exact issue, probably dealt with the same exact person you’re speaking with. I initially put down a deposit on a car in MD and the next day I was told the same exact thing. She gave me the option of refunding my deposit to wait for something in NY to come up for sale that I liked but that would’ve taken 10 days to refund so she sent over a list of cars in the same price range and similar spec currently for sale, ended up buying one with less miles but less options. She was able to get the car relocated to the service center closest to me which saved me a 4 hour drive. Another issue was on the day of my delivery, as I’m at the bank getting the check I get a call from her telling me that my delivery is on hold because there’s a new law in NY that states that a used car has to be sold with the title in the buyers name in hand at the time of purchase. They had ample time to discover this during the 14 days it took them to produce an MVPA but they decided to blindside me at the last minute. In the end I finally picked up the car 2 weeks ago and to my surprise, no title presented at delivery and nothing in the mail as of now.

That is very good to know. Thank you. And it had to be the same person since you're in the NYC area. I ended up finding a NY car and put a deposit down. And she handed me over to the delivery specialist that is located in California!! Did you have to send your paperwork to CA? It seems highly inefficient.

Congratulations on your purchase, hopefully the rest of the process will go a lot more smoothly for you. I was also handed over to an inside delivery advisor in Fremont, CA but they work with the local sales advisors and delivery specialists to coordinate everything. The process was quite inefficient but the guy I was dealing with in CA was very nice and helpful. You won't have to mail any paperwork anywhere, Any documents they need from you can be uploaded in your owners portal under your Tesla account. The best word of advice I can give is to be very persistent in communicating with them. They're very overworked and its very easy for them to lose track of what they need to do to prepare for delivery and this can cost you weeks of delay.

Something about owner not returning previous title or something.

That's a BS excuse. They can request a new or duplicate title from the DMV to work with. They should have the title before they list the car for sale and sell it.

I'm now requesting new temp tags because they are taking so long on this.

Some people have suggested that Telsa deliberately keeps the title in their name as long as possible for accounting reasons. If they can keep the title AND your money past the end of the quarter then it looks better on the books. I don't want to attribute to malice what can be explained by incompetence and I've experienced enough incompetence at Telsa to know that's a fair explanation, BUT at this point I wouldn't put it past them to be playing accounting games.

Great advice. Thank you.

I took delivery of a CPO Model S that was delivered to my local Tesla delivery center. I was told they would mail me a self-registration packet in the mail since I'll be having a friend register it for me in the state I'm a resident in (different than where I'm currently living). Has anyone received one of these self-registration packets? Did it include the title? I've sent emails to my used car sales rep I worked with and the delivery agent, but both have yet to respond. They also gave me a 14-day permit that's on the front windshield - is this the same thing you guys received? In the past, I've always gotten a small temp tag that goes on the rear license plate or rear window, so I found this a bit odd. I've already been stopped by police once.

Has anyone received one of these self-registration packets? Did it include the title?
Short answer: yes I have, and no it did not have the title.

When I bought my car I was told Tesla would register it. Then I received a FedEx with a letter and a few papers stating that I would have to register it. The DMV form they included was wrong, which I told them at the time of delivery and they said they'd fix but obviously did not. But that's no issue because that form is ONLY necessary if someone else registers the car, but now that I have to do it the form is pointless. I learned through emails with Tesla reps that they called my letter a 'self-registration packet' although the rep thought they were still doing the registration themselves and claimed the letter was mailed to the DMV (one of many ignorant Tesla employees I have encountered).

Now they are saying they can't give me a new temporary permit while I continue to wait for the title. They are clinging to the statement "With the documents you already have, you should have no problems being registered" despite the DMV website which clearly states I need the title to register a car that was purchased out of state (unless it was purchased with a loan or is on lease, in which case I would need those documents). I am going to the DMV this Friday to see if they'll register it without the title. Perhaps the DMV website is wrong, and these Tesla reps are right, but I doubt it.
