Cracked windscreen. Can autoglass do it?

Must just be the season. Had a stone take a chunk out of the screen on my American RV last weekend and need to get that seen to. Might have been my Model 3 if I bloody had one!

All that aside it does mean that I have some experience of dealing with insurance companies and hard to source screens. I lost one half of my previous Georgetown’s windscreen (I’ve had a couple of US Motorhome’s in the UK and they have massive screens that no phone jockey has a clue about!). It’s likely they’ll try and steer you towards a known quantity like Autowindscreens. The chosen Uk guys will probably call you and probably tell you they have no idea where to get one. If so, call a Tesla service centre and get some details of the guy who can. Call insurance back and connect the two together. They usually work out something then you get it done. My screen was perfectly sorted by my specialist in a Northampton who does only American RVs. It was a 3 man job and needed to be imported. Insurance happy with that once they realised what a hassle it would be to figure it out themselves. As long as they can talk to the fitter and check it’s not your mate with some sellotape they seem to be fine with it.

the above was about 6 years ago but can’t imagine much has changed.

I am still waiting for my replacement screen (4 weeks on).

I have to say, it may be my imagination, but in previous cars, the winscreens definitely seemed tougher. When I have had stones hit them, they would just chip a bit. On the Model 3 it cracked straight away.

Let's hope my replacement is a little tougher.

It really depends where it gets hit.

In the MS, I've heard a few stone strikes that left no damage at all, but one stone that hit towards the bottom of the screen where the glass is fully supported from behind caused a crack.

If the screen is free to flex it doesn't seem like the Tesla screen is any weaker than my previous cars, but like previous cars, a hit where the screen has no ability to flex will cause a crack.

Autoglass finally came out and replaced the windscreen on Monday. As they left they said that I needed to take it into Tesla to get it calibrated. I've read elsewhere that this isn't necessary for a model 3 so arranged a service visit and when they contacted me to say it would cost £87 (inc VAT) I asked whether it was actually necessary and they came back, after checking with their workshop, to say that, yes it was.

I assume you can drive it, just not use autopilot? I have autoglass coming out next week and have a SC appointment booked in for 17th December as a back up (earliest they could do at weybridge). I could put autoglass off for a month, so am wondering what’s better, driving with a crack or an uncalibrated car?

Autoglass will cover that (and pass it on to the insurer).

Just follow their instructions on how to getthem to pay it direct, they won't let you pay it and claim it back.

Somwhat surprised it is needed though. The Model S self-calibrates without the help.

When I had my screen replaced Tesla said it would flag up a warning if it needed service, otherwise I was good to go.

I'm in the same boat currently. Autoglass can't tell me when they can do it, and I also have a tesla service centre visit booked for Tuesday for delivery niggles, during which they've said they can replace the windscreen for me at the same time. Insurance will only pay £200 towards Tesla costs ( £960 ) but will pay all of Autoglass costs.

Does anyone know if Autoglass screen is exactly the same screen as OEM, or different? Something not right with the robustness of the Tesla screen in UK driving scenario that may be addressed with Autoglass screen?

It will be a Tesla screen.

I'm not sure that the screens are any more or less fragile than any other screen, it just depends on where you get hit.

If it is a spot where there is support behind the glass then it is more likley that there will be a crack rather than a repairable chip.

Do you think that came off the truck? It looks a little forward but then, where else did it come from.

I got hit from a stone from similar truck but in a different car, again on M3. Window marked, but in tact.

You may have enough evidence on original footage to identify the aggregate carrier. Even if you don't get any recompense from them, you at least make them aware how much their trucks are shedding. This isn't an isolated incident, some times you drive past these trucks and they are constantly shedding stones. I wish I had seen this yesterday, I was in a meeting with someone from Highways England and could have raised it with them.

Do Tesla have to replace this or can I get anyone out?

I had a screen cracked (ages ago) and AutoGlass or similar replaced it. After a few days I got headliner creak (I very much doubt I would have noticed in an ICE) and lacking confidence I took it to Tesla to get it fixed. No problem after that.

I also smashed my read quarter-light by running my mower over a stone and catching the quarter-light spot on ... I move the car when i mow now, even though that was probably 1:1,000,000

AutoGlass/whoever again. Significantly worse wind noise ... (I very much doubt I would have noticed in an ICE ... bit of a theme there!) . The installer sent a senior fitter to sort it out. The alignment of the glass was clearly "off by a bit" when he pointed it out to me. The first fitter had used loads of "glue stuff" and second guy had to take off all the chrome trim on that side, to get it out, and also broke the glass in the process ... it was fine after that

I wonder if "silent" EVs are going to make this process more tricky, and therefore expensive??, going forwards

What is it about 4 days in? Just been cleaning the glass and noticed this.

Right at the edge and has separated some of the layers. New windscreen methinks...
