When should we start applying for approval for third party loans? Should we wait for the VIN first?

Got a text from my SA saying delivery is in a few weeks, but no VIN yet. Not sure if I should be applying for loans now or wait until I get a VIN
I am in the same boat. I received a text that I have a 2 week window starting Nov 30-Dec14th. When is the vin actually going to be assigned?

The safest bet to start 3rd party financing is when you have your VIN, then you are at least locked in to a vehicle. Without a VIN, your EDD can be pushed back for any number of reason and it'll just be a waste.

What I would do prior to getting the VIN is actually finalize and decide who your 1st 3rd party financing is and who your 2nd 3rd party financing is. Reach out to them and tell them your situation and see what options you have.

I went with a local, new to me CU. Finalized them as my primary option since they have the best rate compared to Tesla financing. Got a rep assigned to me prior to doing anything and when it was go time (VIN assigned) him and I ran through the app and finished it in 2 days. Literally got a copy of the check 1 hour before delivery time. My delivery date was auto assigned and set to home delivery by Tesla. That's why I was only given 2.5 days to get funded, lol

They rejected me within a few hours after I submitted my application due to my address not being in their "service area".

So if you are not in the DC area, proceed with caution.
That’s interesting. I’m in NC and they approved me on Oct 26th. Working with them hasn’t been the smoothest though. Probably partially my fault but things weren’t complete when I went to pick up my Model Y on Saturday. They hadn’t received funds. It’s been extremely difficult to get someone on the phone. Now Tesla has given me a deadline of tomorrow at noon or I lose the car and go back in the queue. So yeah, if you work with FedChoice make sure you’ve completed every step and confirm they’ve sent funds before your delivery date! I’m used to walking in a dealership and driving off the lot with a car and loan within hours. After a day and speaking with 3 different people at FedChoice funds have still not been wired.

I would probably just finance through Tesla so you don't risk losing your car. you can always refinance to a lower rate after the fact.

I was talking about Signal FCU that didnt approve me due to the address.
I actually used FedChoice for my loan.

Thanks to this thread, i was able to get my FedChoice loan on time and took delivery yesterday night

Tuesday 11/8 - applied for FedCU membership. Approved same day.
Wednesday 11/9 - asked tesla to change from cash to finance. EDD moved to Nov 12-23 (from dec)
Wed 11/19 - applied for FedCU loan. was pre-approved same day and was asked to send purchase order once ready. (rate was locked for 60 days)
Friday - 11/11 - received VIN
Saturday - 11/12 - deliver date of 11/14 assigned (but no docs). had to call Tesla delivery center to get them to send the MVPA. Uploaded to FedChoice same day.

Monday - 11/14 - called Fedchoice at 6am PT to explain the situation and asked to expedite. Loan was funded/wired out same day.
Tuesday - 11/15 - took delivery. - Tesla could not locate the wire, but i sent the proof of wire (some reference number) to them.

Fedchoice part was very smooth. i felt Tesla part was haphazard.

Overall happy with the car.

Congrats on being a new Tesla owner, enjoy the car. Just curious on the rate you got from FedChoice?

Wow!! Apparently, FedChoice just hates me.

Maybe FedChoice doesn't hate me as much as I thought. Although communication has been TERRIBLE and they weren't able to finalize my loan in time, I finally got my loan specialist on the phone this morning (after no contact for 4 days). She told me that even though I had to go with a Tesla lender, they will honor the rate I was approved for back in October and do a refinance. So, if FedChoice moves slowly for you, don't lose hope! I'm off to do a few cartwheels.
