This is really cool. I've thought about making a bag that fits this space. I used to use a pop up trunk organizer to hold my groceries in the trunk that I would just use to carry everything into the house. I mostly dump my groceries into the cubby already, so realistically, I can just take such a bag into the store, dump the groceries into it and then drop it right into the trunk (though, I always forgot to take my organizer on so of just place it in straight from the cart). Then I would just pick the bag up and carry everything into the house. If it was designed to fit the space, it shouldn't get in the way of putting anything else in there either.
