Over the counter at Tesla $85 and no core charge. Wanted the VIN number. Probably don't want old leaky stinky batteries around. $0.20/lb at scrap yard for car batteries.

Thanks! I’ll definitely be proactively replacing mine before the 2 year mark at that price. It’s just not worth playing the well known wonky 12v battery game just to save $85.

I don't think you need to swap prophylactially although can certainly make the case. But having one on hand to do it same day is a great idea if mobile can't get out there next day. Elon is definitely on point focusing on "a better 12 volt experience!"

Anyone had experience with a 12v lithium replacement, like https://www.ohmmu.com? Should last much longer. You know what they say about doing the same thing over and over and expecting a different result...

Other option if you have a battery jumper is jump the cord in the bumper to open Frunk and then jump the 12 V. I was able to get this to work when my 12 V died and it allowed me to at least drive it to SC.

...and this is the easy way to break into the frunk of a tesla.

My guess is that it just a matter of time before your 12V dies. Better if you can maneuver so that the car is facing towards the flat bed truck.
The tech was able to replace the 12V battery in my garage and the car was functioning since it still has about 50% SoC with new 12V battery - they even suggested that I drive it to the SC. I declined stating I am not comfortable driving it and risk dead in the interstate.

I'm glad you didn't. Tesla needs to feel the "pain" to proactively do something about the 12V problem. They've figured out the HV battery why not 12V (See other threads)

When they upgraded my AP computer to V3 they replaced the HV contactors and the 12V at the same time, so hopefully I'm good for a while now

I agree. Most don't know there's a frunk, easier to break the glass.


I don't buy the safety of something that locks out the owner. Crazy not to have a mechanical system back up when power fails. If you're that worried don't store valuables in frunk

good question, I'm checking a voltmeter but not sure if it'll help warn like a regular ICE car 12 V

So, it turned out to be faulty 12V. Nothing else. Replaced and back on the road!

I'm shocked Tesla 12V replacement batteries are only $85. Definitely proactively replacing mine every 2 years.
