The dashcam should use energy only be on when driving. The Sentry should be on if enabled when the car is off. Sentry does use energy all the time it is enabled and the car is locked.
Not quite. The dashcam is on whenever the car is on (not just driving), but uses very little energy so that's not a concern. When Sentry Mode is active, energy usage is much higher, but it's not the dashcam itself using that energy, it's the AP computer analyzing what the camera sees looking for threats.

That is what I meant by driving. I wasn't too clear. To the OP question, if the Dashcam is on 24/7, it is not working correctly and is using power. It is likely the Sentry that you see when you are outside the car, and it uses power. It can be turned off.

There should not be a red dot on the dashcam when you exit and close the door after parking. If there is, yours is broken. If you have Sentry active, the Sentry icon will have a red dot showing it is active when the car is parked. Also, in order to remove the dashcam USB drive, you must stop the dashcam if it is active with a red dot by pressing the dashcam icon and stopping it. The red dot disappears, and you can remove the USB drive.
