So in December of 2019 right before x-mas, I was unfortunate enough to have a kid who was texting on his phone slam into a car (at roughly 30 MPH) at a stoplight which in turn pushed him into me. Everyone involved was ok, no injuries.
The car that was hit took most of the shock so I didn't have much visual damage. My rear bumper was pushed down a little, broken reflector, some broken clips. Upon inspection by Tesla, they found the Aluminum panel on the bottom of the MS between the rear tires had a small buckle. That was about it. For the most part, it was a minor fender bender (for me). I wasn't hit that hard but being Aluminum it bends easy. Total cost was roughly $13k in parts and labor (replacing the Aluminum (labor) was the most expensive part). The Aluminum was cut out and replaced (By Tesla Indianapolis IN), resealed to avoid oxidization/corrosion, the bumper along with all associated plastic parts were replaced (Tesla did everything) and it was an awesome job! The guys at Tesla in Indianapolis are top-notch! They are a 3.5 hour drive for me but all the Tesla SC's I've visited in Chicago (30 min drive) have all been very rude and non-helpful. So I gladly travel to Indy for great customer care.
It took around 30 days to get the car back and during that time I was renting a GMC Yukon Denali (Full Size BUS!). I didn't want it but Enterprise didn't have anything atm unfortunately and no one rents Tesla's in the area that I could find. Since they didn't have anything else, they gave me a great rate on renting the bus. Can you think of a more polar opposite car to go to? A MS to a full-size Denali?
During all of this Allstate was in touch with me on a weekly basis and they always returned my calls. After reading some of the stories up here about Allstate I was really worried, but they were actually very easy to deal with. I informed them up front that I don't pay for gas, I have solar panels on my roof which charges my car so I'm not even paying for electric to put in my MS. I also informed them I would be pursuing a DV claim as this accident definitely impacts the value of my car. They paid for all my gas (roughly $600 (I drive a lot and the Denali drinks gas), and the rental (my insurance paid a set amount for 20 days, Allstate picked up the additional days). Checks were sent out and I had the reimbursement in three days.
I contacted Collision Claim Associates, Inc. (I found them up here in the forums) sent them photos and information to review to determine the amount of DV that has occurred. They came back with a preliminary number based on what I sent them. My intention was to hire them when Allstate started jacking me around but they suggested I wait to see what Allstate offered. I appreciate them not just wanting to take my money (thanks Amy).
Allstate came back and offered me $500 less than what CCA had provided as a rough quote. I did some searching online for 2018 MS with collision damage vs no collision damage and the difference seemed to be in the right ballpark. I haggled a bit with Allstate to see if I could get the $500 or more but he basically gave me his best number refusing to budge so I ended up taking their offer. They deposited the money directly to my account within 24 hours.
All-in-all, dealing with Allstate wasn't a bad experience (compared to what I have read up here). I can't say I have any complaints. The guy that handled the DV part acknowledged that Tesla's were not valued the same as a regular car and were treated uniquely.
Maybe I just got lucky, after reading so many articles of people getting screwed by Allstate I thought for sure I was screwed but not so much. That said I would never use them for my insurance company (I know too many people that regret the decision).
