This was the second time in 20K mi I had to stand on the brakes, this was harder than the first time, apparently, because the sound in the final few feet was akin to a patch of gravel. That was the skid portion, I believe. The part where the deer stopped seemed much longer to me, time takes on surreal aspects in moments of stress. The speed at first sighting was 52 mph. I had seen a deer facing the road only a couple miles previously, and was acutely aware of their presence as a result. I'm not clear if AP would've aided, I had turned it off as it was taking curves too slow for my liking. I was trying to make it home at 2:20 a.m.
