I've posted this reminder/info in numerous places, at TM and here, but people just don't seem to note or get it. So here's a "loud" dedicated thread. With details, for the slow to comprehend. So circumstances or the mental wobblies have got you uncertain you can take your Model S as ordered when first available. So, you're going to bump yourself 6 mo down the line. Smart. Not. When the 6 mo. is up, give or take, you'll get the email saying "It's time!" again. At which point you're 3 mo. from delivery, totalling 9 mo. from when you deferred (with 60 da. to go). Alternative: Don't finalize at the end of the first 30 days. Your delivery date then "floats" day for day until you finalize or cancel. You can pull the trigger at 5 mo., 6 mo., 8 mo., etc. At which point the 60 da. clock starts counting again. What's not to like?
Brian, deferral doesn't bump you down 6 months down the line, it works somewhat like your alternative scenario suggests and you can get back in line at any time when you decide to pull the trigger (confirmed to me by someone who has already deferred).
Also I believe it has been said by those going through this now, that floating is not an option by TM, that they are forcing the deferral process and asking you to declare your desired delay time. Further, you only get one deferral attempt. Can someone confirm this?
I can speak for my experience: I can defer on a day-by-day basis for up to 6 months (verbal phone conversation with specialist)
For normal production, I see no downside to a day-by-day basis AKA waiting to pull the trigger. For Signatures I imagine you can't just string 'em along indefinitely.
After receiving my configuration email (P4229), I emailed my TM contact describing my intent to defer since I was both in the process of buying a new house and wanted the Sunset Red. I was expecting some formal deferral process, but was told that the Finalize button would just wait until I was ready. I expect to finalize in November even if the red is still not available.
Exactly. When you click the finalize button, there are some FAQs on the right side of the page: Also, once you finish configuring, it says if you order by <date> your car will be delivered by a certain month, where <date> is 30 days from when the finalize button shows up.
