We’ll be taking our first road trip shortly after picking up our Model Y, from Denver to NYC. Any recommendations or tips from anyone who has done this or a similarly long trip?
Have a fun time. Tesla makes great vehicles for road trips!
For overnight hotel stays, look for hotels that have charging stations on-site. These are listed on PlugShare and a smaller selection on the in-car navigation.
For fastest charging, assuming you have enough range to make it to the next Supercharger, get on the road when the battery hits 50% charged. You generally can’t make 10 minute stops if you’re traveling with kids, but frequent quick charging stops Yields the fastest time door-to-door
Any time you’re stopped, you should be charging. Skip the rest areas on the highway and hit the Supercharger 20 miles down the road. If you’re not driving, you want to be charging the battery.
Track the first day that you charge at each unique Supercharge site and enter the Superchargers Visited “competition” here on TMC. This is a fun way to bring a game-mentality to road trips. If you take a trip, venture on different highways there and back, etc...
Not an issue now, but if you are needing to use a Supercharger at an overnight stay in the Winter, do that at the end of your drive for the day while the battery is still warm instead of trying to Supercharge a cold-soaked battery first thing in the morning.
Enjoy the open road. Ignore all these hints and just enjoy the drive.
