Did Supercharger cost go up?

We just got our Model Y, and the map shows most supercharger locations at $0.35 kwh in AZ. Is this normal or is this a typo. How are we being charged triple the cost of electricity? Kwh run 0.12-.13, is this a huge mark up or a glitch in the screen?

Not a glitch, and not really a huge mark up either. Superchargers generally get their electricity on Large Commercial & Industrial electric rates. These are billed quite differently than your Residential or Small Commercial rates. Primarily the difference is that the superchargers have to deal with Demand Charges ($/kW) in addition to volumetric ($/kWh) charges. This significantly alters the way that their bills are structured and makes a simple apples-to-apples comparison on the price per kilowatt-hour of electricity pretty much meaningless.

Simplified a bit, when you supercharge, you are paying for the volume of electricity you're getting (kWh) and you're also paying for the convenience of that electricity being offered in a high power installation (kW) which allows you to charge quickly. Both components need to be accounted for in the price you're seeing, and you absolutely shouldn't expect to fast charge for prices that are similar to the price you pay for low power electricity at home.

They have gone up somewhat in the past few months. For example, in my area home electricity is about 17c and supercharger rates are 31c to 34c. They were 27c a few months ago. I think that’s acceptable. Those locations have monster service electrical service entrances, rent, and upkeep. I would think all that would cost a bunch. It’s still less than EA rates.

A sample from Southern California: $0.37/kWh, Northern California: $0.38/kWh
