Digging Tunnels to Alleviate Traffic vs. Teaching Better Driving

Digging tunnels seems like such a huge undertaking (almost impossible). If we would just teach people how to drive properly, traffic would likely not be so bad, thus mitigating the need to dig tunnels.

Never mind.....we better just dig tunnels.

while I agree that there are so many drivers on the roads who seem to have horrible driving skills how would people driving better alter the reality that in many places the high volume of traffic is the overwhelming traffic issue?

There no-traffic-lights-necessary-at-intersections-if-all-cars-automated scenario only works if there are no pedestrians who need to cross the street at intersections. You'd need either bridges or tunnels at intersections to reroute foot traffic.

You've clearly not been to Europe where tunnels are the norm.

Drilled with huge TBM's (tunnel boring machines) ... and if you want to really see three tunnels ... Eurotunnel (under the English channel), Mont Blanc and Gotthard.
