Dimensions of the Model Y

Before reserving a Model Y, I would want to see the overall dimensions, including ground clearance. I do some light off-roading with our current SUV and would like to have at least the same amount of clearance to avoid getting stuck. The photos I've seen so far do not make me think that there is any significant differences in clearance between the Model 3 and the Model Y prototypes.

I need the exterior dimensions before placing an order since I refuse to park outside of my garage at home and have more than one vehicle sharing that space. My wife told me yesterday that the Model Y would probably be the only vehicle she would agree to trade off our Awd Rogue for. This is encouraging but she doesn't drive and I would have to trade off our Rogue and Model 3 to make it work for us. It snows where we live and I want enough ground clearance and need the exterior dimensions to fit our parking needs inside the garage.

If your garage will accommodate LxWxH of 5000(197)x1850(73)x1550(61) mm(inches), you can safely order. They will almost definitely not exceed "Large" vehicle automated parking limits in Asian cities. That lets it be a maximum of 12x0x5 inches larger than the Model 3 (and I'd guess they'll use most of that: 1 inch more ground clearance, 4 inches taller body, ~10 inches longer).

Edit to add: This also likely means that they'll put both the Model 3 and Model Y on a bit of a diet, as the Model 3 LR RWD is already 30kg overweight for the Large car limit (SR, SR+ and MR are all compatible, AWD models are all overweight).

If it only has 1" more ground clearance with less range than our Model 3, we'll probably wait to see the specs and price of the Tesla pickup before making a decision. Our 3 car 600 sqft garage currently has a '12 Leaf, '16 Rogue, and '18 Model 3 along with the normal other garage stuff like a workbench, tool cabinets, bikes, etc.. Before taking delivery of our Tesla, I relocated the workbench and cabinets to accommodate the additional space needed along with selling our 2001 Ram quad cab 4x4 that barely fit door to wall and if it was any taller, wouldn't have cleared the door height restriction. If getting the Model Y or the pickup means we can trade/sell the Rogue and Model 3, I'll be able to rearrange again to make it work but until more is known that decision will have to wait.

Best size comparison in real life I've seen so far.

Thanks for posting this, I haven't seen this picture before. Gives a great idea on the height difference on the two cars.

The ground clearance on the Y seems more than half an inch higher than the 3, from that picture. Closer to 1.5" higher, which would be more in line with most other CUVs.

It is amazing how much about the Model Y that we don't know, and that includes ground clearance.

I contacted Tesla via their chat support (Customer and Product Support | Tesla Support) on this topic.
Here is the transcript...

Me: "What is the ground clearance for each of the Model Y variants? I have a steep and short driveway and have difficulty getting in and out of the Model 3. I need to know the ground clearance of the LR AWD Model Y vs the Performance Model Y (which is listed as having a "lowered suspension"). Will air-suspension be offered?"

Rep: "You will have to contact your local sales specialist for further information in regards to the issue sir."

Me:"But you represent Tesla. This is not some specialty question. This is a basic spec. Like what is the length of the car. What is the 0-60 acceleration, etc."

Rep: "There are different avenues for different types of information. This is something you will need to contact your local sales specialist as the vehicle is still in the sales stage. I am unable to provide you with any other information other than the information on our website that has been made public. Is there any other issue I may help you with today?"

At this point I was really frustrated by the run-around and total lack of transparency...

Me: "I can go to the website myself. The reason I reached out to you is because the info is not on the web site. This is a very poor way to treat your customers. Just be honest and say Tesla has not closed on the ground clearance spec yet. Why would a "local sales specialist" know this spec and not you? Makes absolutely zero sense. Good bye."

Does anyone honestly believe if I spent the time to visit a Tesla center and speak with a salesperson I would get an official answer that a Tesla support rep couldn't answer?

No. They don't know either. But I don't think they were giving you a run around. Probably the very script most everyone else would get. I have found my local service center to be less happy about the Y. They just want you to buy the model 3. "Basically the same car, cheaper, and you can get it now." She went on to tell me that the Model Y would not have a single car delivered in Colorado until 2021.

So be it. Hope she is not correct.

This is classic Tesla. I remember when the Model 3 was already being delivered nobody knew whether the rear seats were capable of being heated or not since the software didn't include that as an option.
The forum had multiple threads on the topic with some saying yes the seats supporting heating and others saying no since they couldn't find the heating elements in the seats. This went on for weeks. One would have assumed that Tesla would provide a simple yes or no answer. Eventually Tesla released a software update and voila the rear seats could be turned on! Sometimes the most basic of questions goes unanswered for months and one wonders why does Tesla treat customers this way.
I think your question though is different since deliveries for the Model Y haven't started yet.
