I logged onto my Tesla account to get a Trade In Estimate for my Model S. On the website, you can select what product you want to trade your vehicle for and I selected "Solar Panels' which it allowed me to do when completing the Trade In process. Several minutes later, I received an email with my Trade In Estimate with a 7 day timeline to complete this order.

On the Trade In Estimate email, at the bottom left hand corner of the email it has the option to 'Order Now'. I was very enthusiastic about taking advantage of the "Solar Panels' option so I clicked on the 'Order Now' button prior to the 7 day timeline. When I clicked on the button, it took me directly to the Solar (Energy) page where I put in info to determine how many solar panels would be needed for my home. Once I completed this info, I received another email from my Solar Rep so I reached out to him to get more info about this entire process.

During my conversation with my Solar Rep, I explained I received all the info about Solar but had not received any additional info about the trade in process and how I would get my vehicle to Tesla for trade in. He shared he was not familiar with this process but would check on his end regarding the trade in process. He also gave me the contact information for local sales in Raleigh so I could follow up as well.

After several calls to the Raleigh Tesla location, I finally received a call back from the Operations Manager. He tells me that Solar Panels are not an option for car Trade In Estimate and that the 'Order Now' button just defaulted me to the Energy page and it was just a coincidence that this page came up. However, it wasn't a coincidence that my Telsa account allowed me to select 'Solar Panels' as my trade in option, email me a Trade In Estimate and take me to the Solar (Energy) page when I clicked on the 'Order Now' button on my email. The operator manager apologized for the confusion and said I can sell my Model S to CarMax, Carvana or private sale to offset my solar cost. SMH is disgust!!!

If a 'Solar Roof' is not a Trade In option, the website should restrict selecting this option and I advised management of this. After going through this entire process, I felt very disappointed, deceived and misled by Tesla and asked them to cancel my solar order. Hesitant to do any future business with Tesla as a result.

1 - have you ever heard of a trade in of a car being used for anything else? Have you ever traded in a car to buy furniture for instance?
2 - the "operator manager apologized for the confusion" and gave you a suggestion around issue, since clearly that is a bug, what else did you expect? Even a trade-in says it is contingent on physical inspection of the vehicle.

I am not sure you have realistic expectation, but I challenge you to find a cheaper solar option (I am in the middle of my solar install and have had 4 non-Tesla quotes before Tesla Energy expanded to NC)

If this is your reaction to not being able to trade a car in on a non-like product perhaps it's best the two parties don't do business together.
