Discussion of Lazer Linear LED bar

After much difficulty, I finally got the Linear-18 Elite to light but not through the CAN-LZR, which in spite of getting the hi and lo can data did not recognize my Tesla Model 3. But with help from the staff at LazerLamps and about a dozen emails back and forth today, we found a solution: a switch connected to a wire on the relay and another connected to the 12volt battery. It’s a temporary solution until the CAN-LZR can be programmed to recognize my car. Once that’s done the Linear-18 elite will turn on with the high beams and off with the low beams.

Tried it out tonight on a curvy and dark two lane highway. The light is really impressive. About 5 times as bright as high beams with a much longer and wider throw. I’ll take a video tomorrow night.

Really impressed with the staff at LazerLamps. The provided as much help as I needed, and even answered my emails long after their day had ended. Given the 5 hour time difference, that’s especially impressive. Their last email was at midnight UK time.

Thanks for the update and looking forward to the video, @artsci. Is the problem you describe a M3 specific issue or would it also be there on my 2018 MS if I were to buy the same setup?

Hey @artsci,
I reached out to Lazer Lamps Ltd. They asked me to send pictures of my car. I did that along with a link to this forum, some YT videos where people have it installed, and also a blog where a guy installed it on (I think) a 2018 Model X.

The sales person pushed me over to Aaron, a Vehicle Integration Specialist who wrote me this:

You will need a can interface for this installation as the Tesla has Can controlled LED headlights. The brackets here were made by Ekstralys and not us so if the brackets we supply with the lamp are not suitable you may need to speak to Ekstralys or fabricate yourself as we've not had one of these vehicles in to have a look. The other connections on the car will be 12v live, ground and also 12v ignition so you would need to find where you can locate suitable feeds for these.

Do you think that's accurate? I believe it is based on what I've read. Is there anything else you think I should be aware of? Any advice on vendors that will carry these items?

Thanks for all your help!

All,
I have picked up the Linear-18 Elite with I-LBA from Forge Motorsport USA in Florida. I was able to order both the CAN-LZR interface from them also. However, after reading the trouble @artsci was having using that one on his model3 with the regular Linear-18, I decided to pick up this CAN interface instead. It came surprisingly quick from www.bilkomponenter.no and Heidi with their support helped me get the right one. DHL international shipping was a little pricey ($50 or so) but I think the cleaner install will be worth it. I'll report back once i have it installed.

Does anyone know if there is an accessory/switched/ignition power in the frunk area of the Model S?
Yes, the 12V battery... 🙂

@SeminoleFSU Did you figure out how to mount and install everything?

Light bar 12v and ground to battery
Light bar ignition switched wire to where?

ALC plug and play to can harness.
Then it has 2 wires to connect to the switched light bar?

Do we still need to get the single lamp wiring kit? Or is that what all this wiring is referred to?

Did you just mount it straight into the bumper? Without taking it off?

Thanks!

Yes, you will need the wiring kit.
The wiring kit is used to connect the light bar to the ALC and 12V battery.

yes - I did get it hooked up. I took pics, do you need me to try and round them up and post them?

I mounted it straight to the bumper. Had to take it off to drill the holes and mount it.

PS. I would NOT get the light with LBA unless you plan to have a switch for LBA inside the car. LBA is great for 2 lane surface streets but will annoy the F out of everyone on more crowded divided hwys and interstates. There is a wireless relay I saw Bjorn install in his car for the LBA... I don't have that- left the on/off and LBA switch near the wiring harness underneath the frunk "pan". Since I can't toggle LBA inside the cabin, I leave it off- so I paid for extra features I'm not using to avoid distracting others on more crowded streets.

I sold the Model 3 and bought a Model S Plaid in December. Last week I drove to Glen Cove, NY to have a Linear 18 Elite with I-LBA installed on the Plaid. Had the same problem: The CAN-LZR does not recognize the signals from the Plaid. The installer is working with Lazer Lamps personnel to fix that. In the meantime, he installed manual on-off switches (hidden from view) for both the LED bar and I-LBA. I’m scheduled to go back to Glen Cove next week for the fix. In my experience the I-LBA works great under all driving conditions.

I noticed this evening that my light bar stopped working. I also got a weird error message (BMS_w035) today that went away after I parked and got back in to drive. When I got home I put the car in service mode and noticed it has a lot more error codes (some only service can see). The ones that were service only sounded CAN related. Of course the light bar is using a CAN interface to know when the high beams are switched and the lights are on/off. I'm hoping Tesla didn't change their CAN bus signals... 😥 I'm on 2022.40.4. I have 2022.40.4.1 pending. I think I'm going to apply that and see if I get lucky and the FW update fixes it. If not I'll have to pop the hood and start checking the wiring for the light. After that it's contact the guy who made the interface.

Lightbar

UPDATE:
One thing I'm noticing is when I throw the LBA switch to the ON position, it used to light up blue (it has a small LED inside the switch) and that is no longer happening. My current guesses:
1. Blown fuse?
2. Lose connection?
3. Malfunctioning CAN Interface/Reader or Lightbar?
4. Something changed with Tesla's CAN signaling and the interface/reader can't interpret the signals

If anyone smarter *cough* @JzCastle or *cough* @artsci *cough* wants to offer any suggestions, I'm all ears :)

First check that the wiring is good. Then I would probably disconnect the CAN interface and lightbar, and then see if the car still shows any warning messages.
Drive a couple of days and see if everything works normally or if they still pop up. This way you can rule out or confirm that this is causing the alarms / problems.

After that it's a wild guess - maybe Tesla changed something or the lightbar is malfunctioning.
I have personally sold my Model S a year ago and driving a Model 3P until Tesla finally starts the new Model S deliveries in Europe, which is hopefully soon.

Thanks for the reply @JzCastle . Will be checking the wiring soon. Did a preliminary check last night but now I need to get more thorough. As far as I know, the CAN error only happened once. I'll check the logs again, but it seemed to be a one-off.

EDIT: The FW update did not help.

UPDATE: FIXED by following this procedure below... I tried this procedure yesterday but with one key difference - I didn't have my lights set to OFF when attempting the flashing.

From Heidi (customer service at bilkomponenter)

Hi,

On Teslas with retrofitted additional lights where ALC is used as a control current adapter, we find that the most common problem when the led bar does not work is solved in the following way:

Park the car if it is not completely parked
Make sure the car is on
Gear selector must be in "P"
Turn off all exterior lights from the pop-up menu on the screen
Within 4 seconds after the lights have gone out - flash the light 6 times - high beam lever towards you
Here it is essential that you release the lever all the way back to the basic position between each flash
The extra light should now work as normal

This procedure turns the ALC back to "AUTO" so that everything works as it should again.

Should this procedure not work on your car. Try 1-2 more times before contacting us for further troubleshooting.

Yes, you will need the 1) Lazer Linear 18 led bar, 2) wiring kit and 3) CAN reader.

Lazer Wiring kit Single-Lamp Wiring Kit (Low Power, 12V)

If you have and only if you have a pre-facelift X/S can you split the wires and take the signal directly from the wires, otherwise you will need to use a CAN reader. Please note that very new Model 3 might not work with these readers.

The other anternative is to use an ALC box (CAN reader). Our neighbours from Norway have made a direct box without any need to split wires, etc. etc. just pure plug-n-play. Adapter til ekstralys Tesla Model S

This is also what I used. Quite easy to use and fully removable. What is also nice is that blinking five times the left signal indicator turns it off (again 5 times turns it on again). Note that auto-high-beams will not work.

Dang, do you drive without the top cover? this looks so dusty....
