DIY: Model Y Painted Calipers

This is an interesting thread… back in the day I would have asked how folks were heat treating/curing the high temp paint with the brakes still on the car. I suppose a Tesla’s brakes never actually are called upon to stop the car. Is it really even necessary to use high temp paint? Does using it without curing it/heat cycling it turn it in to normal paint? For the one panic stop will the brakes even be hot enough to care anyways?

This is 100% on my radar! Anyone have any issues clearing the same day as the color? I see VHT recommends waiting several days, but that would be a royal pain!
I just use a mini fan to blow the VHT paint dry. I am able to apply sticker within an hour. I do not recommend VHT paint though, the nozzle is very bad designed, paint is uneven and runs badly. I used to use Rust-Oleum high temp paint and I am happy with it.

Are you guys brushing the paint on or spraying? I’d think brushing would be way safer? I can’t decide whether to do white with black decals or black with white decals on my white LR, don’t want red since it’s too common and copying the performance.

IMHO: Black on white will stand out. Black calipers are barely noticeable vs unpainted for the effort.

Work in Progress....

Doing a LR to Performance rear swap, might as well paint the calipers. Sanded the calipers and prep for paint, the rears are pain in the ass to paint. Useless holes on the front face of the caliper and the back has too many valleys and random pits.

Couldn't decide which color I wanted so I did some test samples. ended up with Burnt Copper keep its a little more low key, but different.

VHT White Primer
VHT Burnt Copper
High Temp Stickers
SprayMax 2K High Gloss Clear.

Spraymax 2K High Gloss has insane gloss! 2 part gloss with hardener, the real automotive gloss. chemical resistant and chip resistant. Also High Temp resistant. 2K clear is hands down better than VHT clear.

Pro tip on 2K clear: Shoot the first layer closer and wet. Don't shoot it far and tack dry. this will leave bumps.
Could you please share pictures with the burnt copper installed on your car? Looks really good, that shine and finish is immaculate.

Here’s my white on white - car was 8 miles old so brakes were spotless. After a good few coats of white I then added the decals and finished off with multiple coats of clear. 1000 miles in and the look the same. Let’s see how long they will last. Plus point: the clear coats provides a nice smooth finish and this helps to clean them (i use the snow foam then gently pressure washer them!).

Hopefully above gives you an idea. White with black decals and black wheels looks awesome (in my biased opinion)
