DIY Power Lift gate for Tesla Model S Walkthrough Video

Even if one was available and was FREE, I would not do it to my S. Why? Safety. No absolute 10000% guarantee something would not happen and it would open on its own or by accident. Just too risky. I would NOT even ride with someone that had done it to their car. Safety - Safety - Safety - Prevention by not putting my self at risk.

But tell me where I can stand to watch when someone else does it to their car.

I had put in the first generation kit back in February 2017. For a little over a year, the lift gate has been amazing, working as expected every time. However, around May or so this year, it would not stay in the up position consistently. If I were to guess a pattern, it usually happened when the back of the car was pointing "downhill" rather than flat or pointing uphill. I've even had the damn thing come down on my head more than once, unfortunately.

I haven't been following this thread since I had installed this product but, word to the wise, I guess for anyone looking into getting it as mine only seemed to last about 15 months before the performance started to give out. It seems like there's a second or newer generation so perhaps they are more reliable but I suppose only time will tell.

I ended up selling my Model S on Monday and am getting a new one on Friday so I'm very thankful that the power lift gate is now standard on all cars (since I was too frugal to pay $5k for the premium upgrades package back then and again now :p).

That is the V2 kit since it has the motor and cable/latch for the soft close. That looks like the power wire. Its the only thing that would need a fuse. It's odd to have the spade connector on it but just cut that off and feed it into the positap connector to tap into power.

Thanks Mokuzai i’ll give that a try and let the community know how it goes

Just to clarify I should cut off the fuse and just tap it with the positap connector

Notably, even without it, you don't have that guarantee. I'm looking through this part of the forum right now because my non-power lift gate is no longer latching closed, meaning I can't close my trunk at all. Am waiting to hear back from mobile service about getting it fixed but trying to look around if anyone has had this happen before...

I seam to have gotten the latch working and everything else . But the two poles never wants to turn on. I’m not sure if I have duds or something is wrong with the controller, or my next guess is no power is going to the two poles.

Thanks! I got it to work.

But having some different questions now

Mcu works to open and close the trunk
Fob works only for opening
Fob doesn’t work for closing

I have the new kit that doesn’t have the yellow wire. So no cutting the yellow wire for me. So not sure why it’s not working.

Also how did you neatly tuck all the cables in?
The controller placement from other videos could be placed inside the trunk cover. But the power cable so short. How do you wire the power to inside the trunk. The ground wire also really short too.

So my next alternative to place the controller to the right side where I get my 12v.

Any help with how to cleanly tuck the cables in would be greatly appreciated.

I believe the current wiring design is heavily based on my initial writeup. I've been in contact with COZero and giving them suggestions on making it a more complete kit. Like you have noticed the placement for the controller is near the power tap, also the ground wire is near there too. Please check out the pictures from my post a few pages back on the placements I made.

Not sure why the fob would open but not close though. Have you reached out to COZero? They have been pretty responsive in my experience.
