Door lock covers a thing?

It wasn't until I entered the Tesla world that I ever heard of door lock covers.

Is this really a thing that is needed for protection? Or are they more about the look of the door opening?

I was curious too, $15, bought them. Looks good for the 1/4 sec I see them when I get into he car.
Must have impacted my efficiency due to the extra weight but my 0-60 is definitely better
