Downgrade SR+ and get $2000 back?

Canadian Federal 5K$ program started on May 1st, no retro for SR/SR+ bought before...or any other EV.
Same day Tesla announced the 150km-SR to get into that weirdly carved incentive program trying to exclude Tesla...
Really curious to see what happens to these 350km-SR orders!!!

Well the only thing that comforts me right now is the thought of ordering the SR+ before the price hike from having autopilot forcefully added to the car. However, This part would be a lie, even if you could still downgrade, it will be more than a 10% cut to its range. Hopefully, this will be changed, otherwise Tesla have lost all credibility to me.
Its range will be limited by 10%, and several features will be disabled via software (including our onboard music streaming service, navigation with live traffic visualization, and heated seats). Similar to other software-limited vehicles produced in the past, Standard customers will have the option to upgrade to a Standard Plus at any time. Similarly, anyone who has already bought Standard Plus and wants to convert to Standard is welcome to do so, and we will provide a refund for the difference in cost

Yeap, there's a bunch of us like that...and the price hike didn't really change much for the SR+...double hit!!!

Exactly. I picked up my SR+ on 3/30, in an attempt to help them with Q1 results.
I double and triple checked, then checked again that Tesla would not qualify for the upcoming $5k fed rebate when it finally came out.
Got completely screwed getting the SR+ over the SR, and despite my multitude of attempts to downgrade, I get no more info, other than 'the option will appear on your account.'
Then suddenly Tesla makes it possible to get the rebate.
So I've lost ~7k in a month, just with the rebate (they also, lowered the cost of my package days after I bought, causing tax to also drop by 2%). I would have spent that on FSD had they been truthful about their intentions.

I'm so disillusioned with what was almost a religion for me. They couldn't have screwed me more.

The Model PY had better be something truly amazing for me not to switch to the R1S. At least they processed my refund on that now. Maybe Rivian will turn out to have a higher ethical standard than Tesla, or maybe they'll be the same. So far their culture seems a bit different, and their CEO less wishy-washy.

What can Tesla do to ease the pain of customers so lied to and scammed? Tesla knowingly perpetrated these scams, since I can't believe they had hardware parts in the pipeline for the SR, nor can I believe they hadn't thought out the strategy for dealing with the $5k rebate.

They could throw in some features that cost them nothing!!! Otherwise, eff them, and I can't wait to dump my SR clone for the mid-range R1S beast.

I wouldn't call it scam too, but Tesla did intentionally withhold information from their customers to benefit themselves. It is their right to do so, but they should also expect some negative feedback. These are repeated actions Tesla have chosen to take even before the Model 3.

What information did they withhold? It's not difficult to imagine Tesla actively tried to make a real SR profitable and failed. I'm sure the software locked SR is being sold on very slim margins right now so they can keep their promise of selling the $35,000 car. They would lose a lot more money developing a whole new supply chain for cloth seats and reconfiguring entire assembly lines to make them...

So you think Tesla didn't know they would not make the 35k model 3 with cloth throughout 2017-2019(early)? Tesla didn't know they were going to cut their own price in Canada to make the cut for the federal rebate? Tesla did similar things for the Model S before, otherwise I wouldn't call them out on that. I'm still waiting on the promise of that downgrade from SR+ to SR. Hopefully, they won't try to present the 150km(90 miles) version as the only option to downgrade if we are allowed to downgrade at all. A lot of people here would've spent the same amount of money regardless of the rebate, but they want to spend it on things that makes sense, like FSD, colors of interior/exterior instead of spending more money on what seems essentially the same compared to the SR.

Based on the speed at which Elon has been making decisions lately and then changing his mind days later, it would not surprise me at all if Tesla had plans all along to build a cloth seat $35K SR, and then one day Elon woke up and just changed his mind and went in a new direction.

Especially after they started seeing the volume of people ordering the SR version were much lower than they expected.

I feel your pain, because i was in exactly the same boat as yours (I got SR+ with Autopilot), picked up car at Mid March. I placed an order on Mid March knowing that the Salesman told me the price is going to raise soon and not going to back down (guess what!) Also they told me the Federal incentive of $5000 will never get it for Tesla. Few days later the delivery specialist called me and they saids they've got an inventory model that fits my need. I don't want to get it that soon but the specialist saids once they found a pair i gotto deliver it within days, this is their rules.

So yea lesson learned. If i joined this forum before purchasing the car I would've been much more educated than what it is before. Car salesman or delivery specialist from Tesla is no different than any Car Salesman in the industry - they still have to reach their quota. I love the car, it is the best car i ever got, hands down. But the sales and customer service is absolutely the worst I've ever seen.

Pardon my ignorance, but what’s this $5K rebate you’re referring to?

I’m not exactly clear how the downgrade pricing would work. An SR+ is $39,500 which includes AP. An SR is $35K not including AP, or $38K with AP.

So can you request to both downgrade to SR and delete AP, which would be a $4,500 difference, or just downgrade to SR+AP, which would be a $1,500 difference?

So far Tesla has not been able to address this.

So here is an updated interior packages picture that shows what they say will be locked out on the SR once they get around to it:

Tesla 3-Trim Interior Packages Comparison.jpg

So essentially:
  • Disable the fog lights
  • Disable the immersive sound option
  • Reduce the range by 10%
  • Possibly reduce performance.

When people bought there SR+, before the details about SR being software locked were released, AP wasn't standard. If I remember correctly they paid $37,000.
In my case I purchased after they raised the price difference to $2500.
Therefore, my starting price was $37500.

  • Disable the fog lights ($200)
  • Disable the immersive sound option($200)
  • Reduce the range by 10%($1000)
  • Possibly reduce performance. ($1100)

That's how I break down what I paid $2500 for.
