Well, both do have electric motors in them and batteries, which kinda says something. It’s just that one has much better electric motors, a much bigger battery, and does not have a massive, heaving, hot block of metal inside it that blows up a dangerous and volatile liquid.

Drive Car of the Year isn’t simply about the judges’ favourite car. Nor is it awarded to the best car per se, either. This has always been a consumer-focused and consumer-driven award. In each individual category we seek, over a full year of testing and the final week of judging, to find the very best all-rounder.

They have justified their choice here. EV's arent' for everyone. The Rav4 is a sub $50k car, which is more in the ballpark of most Australians than a $70k starting point of a Model 3. Just as the story says, the Lambo and 911 are epic cars but they didn't choose them either...
