Drive disabled for software update.....?

I've been stuck (at my office at least) twice now with this message. I had to have my wife pick me up tonight.... i waited 45 minutes for it to finish whatever it was doing........???? IT says it is checking for updates.. not installing an update. But still can't drive?

No, couldn't do either reboot.... held for over a minute and didnt reboot.... like rebooting was disabled.
