Drive through car wash?

While I do love hand-washing my cars, there is a drive through car wash just down the street that is really convenient. It is the type with lots of brushes and rollers and spinners etc

Should I have any reservation about taking my new MY through a drive-through car wash?

I use one, exclusively. I don't go to car washes that use nylon brushes though, only the ones that use the microfiber cloth ones. No issues in over 2 years.

I have also used manual washes that utilize workers (or myself) with hog-hair brushes. Those don't cause any problems either.

Of course, if you're someone who is super finicky about any micro swirl marks, all bets are off.

I do not disagree with SSonnentag that at the end of the day, automatic car washes will probably not do any harm to the autopilot hardware, Tesla specifically states in the manual to use touchless only and any damage is not covered under warranty:
: If washing in an automatic car wash, use touchless car washes only. These car washes have no parts (brushes, etc.) that touch the surfaces of Model Y. Using any other type of car wash could cause damage that is not covered by the warranty

Most especially, the cameras on the B-pillars protrude from the body and can get damaged/ripped off with a rotating brush or high pressure jet.

High pressure jets can also force water into the camera enclosures.

You need a touchless wash that doesn't rely on very high pressure jets.

I bought an electric pressure washer, a foam cannon, a quality wash mitt on a pole and a de-ionized water system. My wife and I can wash both the Y and the 3 in about 10 minutes total. Rinse with pressure washer, foam with cannon, wash with pole, rinse with pressure washer, hook up de-ionized water to pressure washer and rinse. Done. I have quality quick disconnects on all hose fittings so I can hook up & tear down fast. It's faster than driving up to the car wash and we don't hardly even get wet. It helps that I put a DIY ceramic coating on the 3, I still have to do that on the Y. Use warm water in the rinse bucket in the winter to help keep your hand warm if you use a hand mitt. (Which we only use for the hard to do spots.) You can wash two cars in only a bit more time than one; most of your time will be spent setting up & putting the wash gear away.

I have a gas pressure washer, but it's bigger than the electric, more pressure than I want, and a general PITA for washing a car. I got a small Stanley and threw out the cart. It's so small and light the cart & wheels just got in the way anyway. Don't make the mistake of washing & rinsing with de-ionized water. That would get expensive. Just do the final rinse with it so you don't have to dry the car. I figure it will cost me about 50 cents a wash to eventually replace the filters.

Hey Nakk, love your setup with the car wash process. If you don't mind, can you let me know exactly what you have. I might have to buy it and use them on me and my wife's car. Also, what do you do for the drying process? Thanks!

Thanks! All the links are below. I don't dry. The de-ionized water doesn't need to be dried; it dries without spots. (That's why I use it.) The de-ionizer comes with plastic male quick change adapters on both the in and out system. I changed these to brass with a male end on the in and a female end on the out. That way I can't accidentally hook it up backwards. There are cheaper de-ionizers, I liked how many washes I could get between filter changes with this one. I'm going to get a different hose for the pressure washer, the one that comes with it is a bit stiff. The key is organizing your equipment. I hang the hoses and the pressure washer on the wall. The de-ionizer sits under them. Set everything out in the driveway, hook it up with quick disconnects. If everything is organized, set up and clean up can go pretty quickly. If you're not organized it can quadruple the time required. There are a lot of foam cannons, get one with a large mouth. The small mouths take forever to add soap and are a mess.

In my opinion, don't even think about it. it's quite possible the brushes will scratch the camera lenses making them unusable--even if you don't care about paint scratches. (This actually happened to Denise's Leaf's cameras.)

Also depends on what color you have and how pickey your are.

Black cars show swirils the most. On a white car you will be hard pressed to find them.

My favorite trick is using a microfiber mitt on the end of a long pole. I can scrub the entire car in about 5 minutes. Makes it super easy.

Still need to rinse and dry. Use a separate brush for the wheels and tires.

Absolutely! LOL.

Hey, could you post a couple of large pics of your car? I'm trying to decide on wheel color for my red Y, and gloss black is high on the list. Thanks!
Sure, here's our Model 3P+ with Tsportline 20" TSS Flow Forged matte black wheels. I'm not sure if the red color is the same for M3 and MY but someone else can chime in with their assessment. You can check @Tsportline's page showing a red Model 3 with the three TSS wheel colors they offer here: Tesla Model 3 20. I think their M3 car/wheel combo photos are better quality than their MY car/wheel photos, probably due to more time to compose the former. I think black wheels on the MY look even better with its chrome delete.

Took the MY into a touchless carwash yesterday and found this odd "streaking" on the black matte exterior trim while drying the vehicle...it appears to be permanently damaged. Anyone else have this issue and/or come across a fix?

Thank you for those links...yep, exact same problem others are having. I even searched this forum first for "car wash" to see if any issues popped up. Wish I would have seen those! Will post the response from Tesla when I hear back.
