Driving on highway, car shut down

My buddy with a model 3 just called me. He was driving on highway and got a message to pull over safely and car had shifted to D. He could not use accelerator or any signal and had really hard time pulling over since he was on left lane with no shoulder. He rebooted and it let him put it in D and pull over safely. Luckily he wasn't far from home. Tesla said they will tow it in morning to their SC. What could be the issue? Has around 600 miles rwd with ap.
