Putting a plug on a HPWC might be against code. The HPWC was designed for the 100 amp circuit although it can be used on less by setting the jumpers. But if one was going to put a plug on it, might as well just get a UMC.

Except that its cable is 5 feet longer, which to some people is an advantage.

Hmm: cost less, heavier cable so less line loss even though it's longer, I could use my various unsanctioned adapters and set the jumpers appropriately instead of dialing back the car - sounds line a win-win-win to me. I might need one now!

Edit - I just looked it up, the $500 one is the 8.5' long one. Need the $550 one for 24'.

Warning - Will Robinson. Mr Brass, you gonna put a plug on a WC and use different adapters? 'xplain, please. Isn't that risky, with what gain?

The HPWC has been useful in that it keeps the clutter to a minimum. We have one HPWC serving two vehicles most of the time, but on the other side of the garage is a NEMA 14-50 where we plug an extra UMC into for the rare times we need to plug in both vehicles. I would have opted for the shorter 8 ft cable on the HPWC, but we ended up getting the variant with the longer cable to allow for outdoor charging in case we have guests with a Tesla staying with us awhile. I guess we should add ourselves to the Destination Charging list?

I had an unused 30 amp water heater line in the back of my garage. I installed a NEMA 14-30 outlet on it. It take about 2.5 hours to restore the 45 miles that I commute each day. Total cost was less than $10, plus $45 for the 14-30 adapter from Tesla.
VERY good idea. Great use of existing resources. Who cares how long it takes 99% of the time, as long as it finishes before leaving for work in the a.m., each day.

This is exactly what I did for my S. My commute is about 42 miles per day. No reason at all I needed more than the 30A outlet, and had an unused receptacle in the mud room 10 feet from where I was. Total install from there was under $100. (And the adapter was an additional cost of course)

My wife on the other hand just received her Model X, and we decided to go with the HPWC with a 60A Breaker so she could charge at 48A instead of the 40A with the Mobile Connector on the NEMA 14-50 outlet. If it was only overnight charging then it wouldn't matter, but she is a realtor and might have an hour or two between meetings during the day, and those extra miles on the X are very helpful when you are short on time. Plus she can keep the mobile charger in the trunk for whenever she may need it elsewhere.

Everyone's situation is different, even my wife and I had different charging needs!

I have a gas dryer. I looked behind it and found an unused 10-30 dryer plug which I had moved from my laundry room to my garage. It still works well and stays cool after 50,000 miles. Tesla wants to send me a new 10-30 adapter. Coming soon.

Hi. I got a gas dryer too. Nema 10-30. How do you get the adapter? Looks they don't sell it anymore?

You may have an opportunity in the coming months. Tesla has said that after the 14-50 recall is accomplished, there will be similar replacements of 10-30 and another adapter with re-designed versions. First-time buyers would be able to get them after the recalled ones have been satisfied.

Remember an advantage to using the HPWC is if you add a second Tesla vechicle in the future, you can add a second HPWC to the same circuit. They are smart enough to share the load and not trip your breaker. @Saghost said something similar. That's what I did in anticipation of M3.
