Commissioned about a year ago by a Dutch shooting brake collector, the Model S Shooting Brake is being developed by independent design company Niels van Roij Design based in London. It’s more than just a one-off as a small batch of 20 units is planned and the company is already accepting deposits for those willing to get their hands on what is shaping up to be a stylish wagon.

I had posted several times pre-M3 2016 reveal that I hoped that the M3 would be a shooting brake design, like this BMW:

Also, a shooting brake can be 2 or 4 doors (really, 3 or 5 doors). It's just a design style. The BMW 5-series sport wagon (shooting brake) is very popular in Europe.

So now I'm hoping (fingers crossed) that the Model Y is a shooting brake and not a mini-Model X or boring crossover SUV design.

What a Shooting Brake Is and Why Automotive Journalists Love Them

Since I am in many respects stuck in the late 1970's-early 1980's I insist a proper shooting brake has two doors. Now it seems to be evolving back to it's origins to mean anything that can carry guns and break in horses. Thus I suggest the prototypical shooting brake of 2017 must be this:

Is that not really what the modern version would be if we wish to be true to origins?

OTOH, The Model S version should end out being very, very pretty.

My own personal favorite one was this:

That, I think, is the spiritual precursor of the P100D shooting brake.:D

I was lucky enough to have driven one. Not so quick as an SP100D but with a lovely sound and spectacular presence. It was de rigeur in front of the Casino de Monte Carlo, which is where I first saw it. The new Tesla shooting brake will fit in there quite perfectly, I think.

What about a stationwagon that sort of hides that it has four passenger doors?
This is the Alfa Romeo 156 SW, that was never available in the US.

Yes, and it also handled better than did the front-heavy standard 156. I’ve had a few Alfas. I never owned a 156SW but I often drove one.

There are two shooting brakes now.
The one from Britain, that looks more like the Brits are in a pre-funeral mood because of Brexit - see below....

... and the joyful, sporty one from those crazy Dutch ;-) that gives the impression that the occupants are on a picknick in the countryside:
