The Dutch government has announced one of the world’s most aggressive plans to transition its transportation system to electric, a goal for all new vehicles in the Netherlands to be zero-emissions by 2030.

The proposal was included in recommendations by the country’s four coalition parties last week and extends the timeline of a previous proposal to ban the sale of new cars powered by internal-combustion engines after 2025. The government’s decision to revise the goal shows its understanding of the plan’s difficulty. And the plan is just that for now, there is no law in place.

Other countries are also pursuing a fossil-fuel-burning vehicle ban. The UK and France want to ban the sale of gas and diesel vehicles by 2040. China hasn’t yet offered a timeline for a ban, but is making significant investment in EVs with a plan for 5 million electric cars on the country’s roads by 2020. California’s governor has also mentioned the possibility of a zero-emissions mandate.
