That appearance was a "Elon is a great guy PR visit". I thought it was very good and gave him a chance to pick up some PR points after last week. Well done Tesla PR department.

I agree. And also, here's a cool guy, doing cool stuff that maybe you (audience) hadn't heard of. Now that I've introduced him, go Google him.

Elon was there since SpaceX is launching next week which explains the SpaceX focus. While SpaceX is not public they still need public interest on their side to keep lawmakers from favoring ULA and other large corporations that line the politicians political pockets. There is an argument to be said that only reason why Commercial Crew hasnt been shutdown and why SpaceX got some military contracts is due to Falcon 9's success and the fact that space enthusiasts are rooting for "David".

Without these high profile launches the government would have swept SpaceX under the rug.
