Elon! Please send Sentry mode

Unfortunately I got woken up last night to the sound of my Model X being smashed in a hit and run. I really wish I had sentry mode to get a glimpse at what happened.

The Tesla service center in Dallas said that they will not be able to repair it and I have to send it to Service King.

Problem is that even with the Sentry mode, many Urban areas will do little to punish those doing the smash and grab. They seem to have convinced themselves that it a small issue, and the owner will simply have it repaired by their insurance company.

But like NY learned long ago, a broken window is often the first sign of a degrading city.

But it was not a smash and grab, it was a hit and run. If Sentry mode could have taken a video of the license plate of the offending car, that would have been useful.

@Uncle Paul , I'm guessing this wasn't a "Smash and Grab" though, more like a "Smash and Run." My ***guess*** is that the driver that did that was "under the influence" and another guess, most localities really frown on that and want the person identified so that they don't actually hurt someone the next time they decide to repeat their "performance."

Yah, it was definitely a smash and run. There were Audi parts left behind in the wreckage, so it is probably unlikely that it was an uninsured driver.

My guess is that they were probably under the influence. It would have been nice to get their license plate number from the cameras.

Sorry to see this. Instead of relying on the currently non existent sentry mode consider installing 2-ch dashcam with 24/7 recording capability. That’s what available, today.

Consider getting video cameras for your home. Most of the homes in our neighborhood do. And the neighborhood association has cameras on the entry road. They cut down on vandalism and more importantly, sales people coming up to your door.

This is just sad to see such targeted attacks. I bet those are thugs more or less related to TSLAQ or dirty oil camps. Hang in there, they would be history soon.

Do you have nextdoor.com in your neighborhood? In our neighborhood, we have 46% of houses signed up. Anytime there is a mail theft, package theft, etc.., 46% of the 1500 surrounding houses will share their security camera footage of the getaway car or what the person looks like. It's also great with lost dogs/cats. I think most of them got recovered quickly... no more putting up pictures on light posts.

Would sentry mode have helped? Seems like there is a good chance that in the dark with the way the Tesla cameras are arranged and the resolution of the recordings it might not have been possible to get the licence plate.

Ouch, always unsettling to see damaged Teslas.. best of luck on getting it patched up. Agree with some of the above, hard to say if Sentry mode would have caught the plate, but possible. We will see next week when it gets released (per Elon's tweet).

This is interesting - via a firmware update USB ports will remain powered on. My guess is the car will remain in a low power mode after locked. If they are going to do this, they should then make 12v sockets powered or maybe they will anyway in this low power mode
