Email to finalize but "no" red.

I think OP is simply frustrated that it is time to finalize but he can't get a red car The only alternate seems to be to defer 6 months. And who knows if this will subject him to the price increase.

I too would like a red car and will soon be in the same boat. Perhaps unwise of Tesla to bring the new red to Get Amped and put it in review pix and then make it unavailable.
Exactly PhatCat ...

Had I been lured (and they tried) into the Signature list, I would be very disappointed. On the one hand, I would have gotten "my" favourite colour. But, I think Sigs have not been "treated" well. To think that I would have plunked down $35,000 more ... for 2-3 years ... (at 5% interest = $5,200 gross) ... when had I kept my original reservation in the 1,800's (canceled due to my being relocated to the UK permanently that washed out); I would be getting my car only weeks after Sigs. As it is I would wait maybe 4 months more ...

And their web site, until recently, was still awash in Sig Red as if that was available.

This strikes me as all part of the small newer company issue. As an early adopter you have to understand that this is par for the course.

You always have the option you mentioned, to cancel your reservation. Red color seems like a small issue compared to missing jump seats, $600 a year maintenance fee, and waiting two years for your car but someone who ordered their six months ago got theirs. But everyone has their own priorities and red is your hot point. Good luck.
The $600 a year was added to my cancel weight factor. And still might. Not having young kids - a non issue. If I did, I would use temporary seats?

I also received my Time to Config email yesterday, and plan to wait for the 2013 Red. I was told by my Tesla Contact that the 2013 Red would be added to the Design Studio before the end of the year (five weeks or less away?) and I could select and Finalize at that time. Does not seem to be much outside of the 30 time to configure window. With P 9001 I was not expecting delivery until May/June anyway.
Another internal miscommunication? My rep told me he didn't know but not to expect the red to be available until my original delivery date, currently showing Feb / Mar 2013. Then wait min of 90.

My suggestion is: take the white or the black car without metallic.

when you receive the car, go to a car wrapper and choose the color you wanted (take about 4 days an the cost is around $3000.
you safe the $750 from the metallic and the $950 from the paint amor. so it is only $1270 extra for your unique car with paint protection.
VERY interesting idea. You think $3,000? Any idea if it would void any warranty?
Hummmmmm. Think I'll make local enquiries and check with Tesla rep for any issues with that.
Anyone else doing that?

The SIG red has always said to be for SIG cars only though, and on the site SIGS are marked as sold out with a waiting list. No miscommunication there.

I had also planned to do as Xfrank suggested and had even lined up a shop to do it until Tesla allowed me to change my color.

It shouldn't void the warranty but can always ask Tesla. The wraps are removable and look very nice if well done. It is a time consuming process and not easy to do without seams everywhere which is why it costs a lot.

OMG!!! I completely misunderstood ... I thought car wrapping was slang / vernacular for a paint job!

Then I researched it ... and found, among others,

vinyl wrapping : bmw m3 full car wrap by pw pro 720p - YouTube

which rock have I been living under?

I'll definitely look for a local "wrapper" - Chicago area.

I assume this is "crease" free and the wrapper will know where to get the vinyl and the colours the vinyl is available in?

Thanks, so much, for this idea!

I've never had a wrap done on a car but know someone who did their own car on a Lotus. It took two people (who were not professional installers) many days to do it but they did a nice job. I think it means getting the large pieces and carefully applying it around bends such that it doesn't wrinkle. Using large sheets also allows then to not have a line in the middle of a body panel. I think it's available in almost any color or print you can imagine but am not certain. I've seen the matte black which looks sharp.

A very good friend of mine does vinyl wrapping and we discussed doing it to my car. The color that I'm leaning towards is the Red Frost that the new limited edition M3s are coming with.

With that being said, good luck to the OP getting the options that you want. Just as an FYI, wrapping your car in the color that you want gives you the flexibility to get a more conservative color from Tesla that will allow for easier resell when/if the time comes.

probably it is cheaper than $ 3000. when you take the car with the black roof, they don't have to wrap the roof also.
I'm not a car wrapping specialist but I have a little experience with this. For me the model S seems not the most difficult shape for wrapping. also the door handles are more easy to do then with a regular car.

As a base you better take the black one I'll suppose, then it is impossible to see some base color in the shadow edges around the lights and grill.
when you ask for a price for wrapping, show them some pictures of the car.

I want also the red one.I'm P1332 EU (Belgium)
maybe the red is just in time available for me
Good luck
for people who love yellow::rolleyes:

Well, I am in the 8400 area and got my email yesterday.

I should be ecstatic.

Instead the email is "useless" to me.

I just got off the phone with a Tesla rep and I am told that if you want a red, you can wait up to 6 months just to finalize.

Apparently, the factory simply doesn't have sufficient capacity to paint more than, what 3 or 4 colours?

Because they still have to paint any US Sigs left, plus Canadian Sigs plus Euro sigs, etc. etc. they cannot introduce "fire engine red" until March or April next year; about when my car should be delivered. Not when I finalize my order. So I still have a 9 months wait, minimum it sounds like, before I take delivery of car, which in theory the colour I loathe ... it SCREAMS RED!

I know I will make no "friends" with the "Signature club" but NO ONE outside these forums would know that Sig Red is anything "special"; nor am I aware of any car in history where its colour is part of its "pedigree".

You can have all the badging you want. But not colour.

Flat out, it's the only attractive, subtle, elegant and PRACTICAL* colour. Black would be my 2nd choice but in the summer it's too hot* inside the car.

So I have to decide whether to cancel my reservation or just put up with some BAD (IMO) decisions Tesla made years ago to keep Signature people happy. And wait FOREVER. Or wait til "X".

But as much as I "believe" in Tesla, why would I not wait 2 years and order again then?

And no, before anyone PM's me to offer ... I am not paying usurious prices to buy someone else's "Signature Red" ...

There was a time where you said you'd just defer until the red was available. Not good with that anymore?

If I got mine today, I too would defer.

- to get red
- to await the important announcement concerning rapid charging. That's HUGE in my book.

(Having enough problems with my current LEAF. It's in the shop with a problem with not accepting a DC rapid charge.)

Bonnie, you are quite right! Like my girlfriend, you never forget a bloody thing! :)

Could say patience is getting the better of me? While I love my (little Leaf), I would like a little more range. Would not be an issue if the local rapid chargers managed by Charjit worked worth a crap. There are 6 within 15 miles of me and only 1 works.

Based on the replies in this thread and having for the first time paid close attention to wrapped commercial vehicles, I decided to go with black and get it wrapped. First a visit, Monday, to a wrapping shop or two to see details up front and how the vinyl resists weather, dings, scrapes, etc. But I think, maybe, it might "add value" to the car. If well wrapped, 3-5 years in, and I felt like selling for an X or Gen3, could "pull" wrap off and have a great, original paint job for a would be next buyer.

For now, Bonnie, my decisions are single or double on board chargers ... (will need, I think to upgrade my garage sub panel to 100Amps from existing 50amps); the only feature I simply cannot justify is Performance.

Otherwise I am going for, 85kwh ($8,000 more as, let's face it if you go with middle battery you would get the Supercharger), Black, cream interior, pano roof, 19" wheels, no rear seats or parcel shelf and regular sound. (Hope regular sound goes to 11!) Then budget $2,500-$3k for wrapping. Wonder if they'd deliver debadged for ease of wrapping.

The one thing I did not try in the test drive is how small a turning radius it is.

Personally I think a wrapping company near them would jump at the chance to offer it OEM.

On a more serious note, I hope you are feeling much better?

Red has shown up on the design page again and you can order it. Will that make a difference in your choice?
Well, my answer was going to be no. I had planned on taking delivery of a black one and getting it wrapped.

Then, per your suggestion (?), I went back to the design store. The red on the "palette" and the resulting red on the photo of the car, is not as fire engine red as I was led to believe.

I MIGHT go to my local store (Oak Brook) if they have a sample of it in.

However, it still results in an up to 6 months extra wait.

So I think I'll get it wrapped in something else. Besides, I think MAYBE wrapping might just protect the paint very nicely and if I were to resell the car later, black is more easy to resell than red?

And my final paperwork is coming tomorrow ... after I made a decision change after they sent me the first set of papers. So better leave it as black! But thanks for thinking of moi!
