Emissions testing on a Tesla in Wisconsin

So I got my annual plate renewal for my Tesla. However, it said that in order to renew my plates I have to have it emissions tested first. Huh? I tried to renew online and no-go. Emissions test required.

I called the DMV. As soon as I mentioned Tesla the woman on the phone immediately knew what the issue was. They said that their system doesn't recognize small manufacturers VIN numbers like Tesla. They have to manually go through and adjust your car's information in their system to recognize it as an electric car. Once that is done you can immediately renew your plates and won't have the same trouble in the future years.

So I am making this post for anyone who has gotten the same message from the DMV in Wisconsin. You don't actually have to go get emissions tested. You just need to call them and fix their data in the system.

Your regestering agent forgot to add the code to excuse your car from emissions testing. When I registered mine the agent was very diligent to make sure he had it correct.

I'm sure it can be still added.

HI @glhs272 Is this still an issues that you are aware of? I am in the middle of purchasing my tesla and having it shipped to Chicago then register in WI but I travel a LOT and cannot come back to deal with emissions
